-
Press Alt and the letter A to apply then press the enter key to leave the visual settings dialog box.
Fixing Potential Windows 10 Display Problems
With every Windows update, it's always possible that the update can change display settings. This is something to be aware of after every update if experiencing problems in Samplitude. If this happens, then here are some things to look at.
Screen resolution issues.

Press the down-arrow key to change it to something else other than the setting that it is already on. Note: in some situations, pressing Alt plus down-arrow will open the combo box to allow us to choose a setting if down arrow doesn't work.
-
Tab once to the “keep changes” button and press the spacebar to check that option.
-
Again, tab to the combo box for screen resolution.
-
Press the up-arrow key to change it back to the setting that it was on previously. Note: In some situations, pressing Alt plus down-arrow will open the combo box prior to choosing a setting.

-
Reboot the PC and all should be well with HSC sets and Samplitude scripts.
Scale and layout issues.
-

-
Press the tab key once in order to navigate to system and press the enter key.
-
Press the tab key in order to navigate to display.
-
Tab through the dialog box that appears and when focused over the combo box for Scale and layout, change its value back to the default with the up or down-arrow keys to (100%).
-
Close the dialog box with the Windows keystroke Alt plus F4.
-
Restart you're PC. Note: you will not be prompted to do this, but it is necessary in order for Jaws to apply the new settings.
A note on updating display drivers.
Please be careful when upgrading display drivers for video cards on Windows.
-
When doing this, you may receive a message that reads like the following:
"Some applications appear to be blurry. Would you like to fix this"?
If this question is asked, please tab over to the "no button". We do not want to press the "yes button" under any circumstances as this may result in the Scale and layout issue outlined above to reappear which will cause the Samplitude Access scripts to encounter problems.

Installing The Samplitude Access Scripts
Installing the samplitude access scripts is easy, as the installer guides us through each step. First:
-
Download the scripts from the:
Samplitude Access downloads page
-
Unzip the file and locate the SamplitudeAccess.exe file appropriate for your system. E.G. 32-bit/64-bit.
-
Press enter on this file and run the installer.
-
Follow the prompts, then on the window to select the install type, we are presented with 3 options.
-
Full, this installs all needed files for samplitude access.
Note: this would be the option to choose if this is a first install of the scripts.
-
Install bitmaps and Samplitude Access INI files, this only installs the needed configuration files.
Note: This is the option to choose if resetting Samplitudes configuration back to the default Samplitude access state.
-
Jaws scripts - Required to use Samplitude, this only installs the Samplitude access Jaws scripts.
Note: This is the option to choose if a script version is already installed and the Jaws scripts need to be updated.
-
Continue following the prompts, select the version of Samplitude and make sure to select which version of Jaws you wish the scripts to be installed in, if there is more than 1 version on your system.
-
When asked if you want the Magix Low latency driver disabled, it's highly recommended that this is left in the default checked state. This is because this driver will take preference when opening Samplitude, potentially resulting in no speech through your soundcard.
-
Continue through the installer prompts and click install. All of the needed files and scripts to run Samplitude Access are now installed .
Loading the Samplitude Access keystrokes file
When installing Samplitude access, you have the following options:
-
A full install, which installs all the needed files.
-
Only installing the Jaws scripts.
-
Installing INI files and bitmap files.
One drawback of the full install or installing INI files and bitmaps, is that this will reset any system configurations you've previously made in Samplitude, but in most cases, the only updates have been to the Jaws scripts and keyboard shortcuts.
So, the "SamplitudeAccessX6Keystrokes.ssc" and "SamplitudeAccessX4-5Keystrokes.ssc" files allow you to import any updated keystrokes without affecting your configuration. You are then able to update the scripts via the Jaws scripts option in the installer.
If this is the best option for you, do the following:
Note: You will find any current updated keystrokes file within the zip archive of the Samplitude Access scripts you've downloaded.
-
Run the installer and choose to only install the Jaws scripts.
-
When done, open samplitude and load a project.
-
From the VIP/Arranger, press "Y" to open the system settings.
-
Press "K" to move to the Keyboard and Menu settings.
-
Shift-tab back until you reach the "load" keystrokes file button
-
Press the spacebar to open the load dialog.
-
Browse to the "SamplitudeAccessX6Keystrokes.ssc" or "SamplitudeAccessX4-5Keystrokes.ssc" file on your computer and press enter on OK, the file will be imported.
-
Finally, tab over to OK and press enter to exit the system settings, you now have the latest keystrokes.
Uninstalling The Samplitude Access Scripts
Samplitude Access can be uninstalled the same way that any other Windows software is uninstalled. It is listed in Add/Remove programs in Control Panel on your PC.
Alternatively, run the uninstall.exe located in the folder here:
%programfiles%\Samplitude Access X6
Note: You can access this folder by going to the run dialog with windows key plus r, typing or pasting the above path in there and pressing enter.
or
%programfiles%\Samplitude Access X5
Note: You can access this folder by going to the run dialog with windows key plus r, typing or pasting the above path in there and pressing enter.
or
%programfiles%\Samplitude Access X4
Note: You can access this folder by going to the run dialog with windows key plus r, typing or pasting the above path in there and pressing enter.
This is dependent on which version you have installed.
Note: if installing a major version of the samplitude Access scripts, then please run the uninstaller first before installing the new version.
What the samplitude Access Installer actually Does
-
Installs shortcuts for Samplitude Access and various files in the start menu.
-
Installs a folder called Samplitude Access X6, X5 or X4 in the Program Files folder, containing:
A folder called Reg Keys for Magix Low Latency Driver, which contains files to enable/disable the Magix Low Latency driver.
A folder called SamplitudeAccessAccessibilityINIFiles, which contains a copy of INI files distributed with the installer.
The following files are also installed: braille.html.
keystrokes.html.
midieditor.html.
objectselection.html.
readme.html.
takecomposer.html.
whatsnew.html.
license.txt.
v9.0changelog.txt.
and a file called uninstall.exe.
-
Adds a set of INI files into the installed version of Samplitude Pro X/Suite, which is located at:
C:\Program Data\Magix\Samplitude version.
The following settings are only added when the 32-bit installer is run:
Sam.ini which contains various settings for 32-bit Samplitude.
Sam.TBX2 which contains all of the toolbar layouts required for 32-bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
Sam_vis.ini, all of the Window layout information required for 32-bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
The following settings are only added when the 64-bit installer is run:
Sam_x64.ini which contains various settings for 64 bit Samplitude.
Sam_x64.TBX2 which contains all of the toolbar layouts required for 64 bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
Sam_x64_vis.ini, all of the Window layout information required for 64 bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
-
Alters INI entries in files in a couple of folders in the bitmaps Folder in:
C:\Program Files\Magix\Samplitude version\Bitmaps
These folders are called Carbon and mxgui.4.0.
These are amended INI files that remove Unicode characters that Jaws misreads. The font in the files was changed from Magix Corpid font to Arial.
A Note On Using The Samplitude Uninstaller
When Samplitude Access is uninstalled, the ASIO Magix Low Latency 2016 driver is re enabled in the registry.
Extremely important :
If the box is checked in the Samplitude Access uninstaller to remove HotSpotClicker sets, then all HotSpotClicker sets that the installer has put in place, including any installed sets that were installed by Samplitude Access but have since been modified, will be removed. Any customised sets or sets that have been put in place after Samplitude Access was installed will be left on the system.
Adding Shortcuts To Samplitude Documentation On Windows 10
For some reason on Windows 10 Magix have chosen to only provide limited access to documentation on Windows 10. There is a documentation folder in the following location in Windows 10:
\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X Suite\
This folder contains one shortcut:
Samplitude Pro X Suite Manual
In Windows 10, there is a documentation folder that provides links to the Samplitude.chm and other useful files. This folder is usually located in:
%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X5 Suite
Note: You can access this folder by going to the run dialog with windows key plus r, typing or pasting the above path in there and pressing enter.
This folder can be restored plus some other useful shortcuts to documentation by downloading:
The Samplitude Pro X5 Documentation Shortcuts.zip
(50KB)
Or the:
Samplitude Pro X4 Documentation Shortcuts.zip
(26.3KB)
Note: these shortcuts contained within the Documentation folder point to files in English however they could easily be modified to point to your language of choice. Full instructions with regard to where to place either of these folders are available in the:
samplitude_documentation_folder_instructions.txt
File which is inside the zip. We recommend downloading the documentation zip, as this will add some additional shortcuts to help files for the Analogue Modelling Suite, Vandal, VariVerb, Vintage Effects Suite and various help files for Samplitude etc.
Installed System Option Configuration Changes
The installer makes the following changes:
Under audio set-up:
-
Device Resolution/Driver Communication radio button is set to 24-bit.
-
The buffer setting slider is set to 1024 (the lowest setting).
-
The "monitoring behaviour" combo box is set to "Tape Monitoring.
-
The monitoring set-up mix input and output check box is checked.
-
The monitoring set-up out slider is set to 100%.
Under MIDI:
-
Activate SyseX Input check box is checked.
-
Checking this box allows Samplitude to communicate with external MIDI devices.
-
Note on chasing check box is checked.
This setting causes held MIDI notes to be played and be heard) when they have received their "Note On" command prior to playback.
-
Force MIDI sync is set to 100.
This makes Sync as tight as possible between audio and MIDI tracks.
-
MIDI recording buffer is set to 60s.
Under recording:
-
The recording bit depth radio button is set to 24-bit.
-
Record button in record options can stop recording check box is checked.
-
Pre-recording. The buffer is set to 10 second's.
-
The post-recording length is set to 0.5 Second's.
-
The combo box is set to "No dialog after recording".
Under playback:
-
Escape key stops playback and recording (for overload situations) check box is unchecked as pressing the escape key anywhere when in playback mode will stop playback which is not desirable when Altering effects in real-time or in other dialog boxes.
Under performance:
-
Multi CPU support, the Maximum number of CPU's is set to 3.
Note: we have left this on the default of 3 as we felt it best to take a conservative approach with regard to this setting. However, if you have a quad core CPU in your system then you would set this to 8 as you have 4 cores and 4 virtual cores. Feel free to adjust this setting accordingly. E.G. if for example, you have a duel core system then you would set this to 4 as you have 2 cores and 2 virtual cores. This setting can be changed by typing a number such as 4 for a duel core system or 8 for a quad core system in the edit box. Samplitude supports up to 32 cores on a system.
-
Deactivate muted tracks for ASIO check box is checked.
-
The ASIO Priority Boost checkbox is checked
-
Deactivate Effects on empty or silent tracks check box is checked.
Checking the above-mentioned check boxes releases more CPU cycles as those options only use the CPU when active. E.G. if a track is muted or if an effect is not active then those CPU cycles that were being used are released.
Under Extended Buffer Settings:
-
Preload at play start, the preload is set to 100% .
-
VIP Object slider is set to 1024.
-
HD-scrub buffer: is set to 1024.
-
Test buffer: 2048.
-
The buffer number is set to 4.
Under VST/Rewire:
-
Start all object-based plug-ins on playback check box is checked.
Under the import wav file options, the following settings are set:
-
"Positioning in project Use selection of order of file dialog radio button is chosen in this dialog box.
-
"Positioning in project load all files to selected track" radio button is checked.
-
The "Positioning in project Load multichannel files in a Folder Track" checkbox is checked.
-
The "Copy wave files to project folder" check box is checked.
-
The "convert compressed files to wave format check box is unchecked.
In the Software Instrument Routing Window:
-
The "simple instrument routing" radio button is checked.
Note: this Window only appears as part of the process of inserting a softsynth.
In the start new project settings opened with the letter E:
-
The sample rate is set to 48 KHz.
-
The number of tracks to be inserted is set to 2.
Under the transport console accessed with Control plus Shift plus T:
-
The "Click" check box is checked.
Optimised System Option Configuration
If you wish to further optimise Samplitude with more configuration, below are some extra settings that may be useful.
-
Start Selection Dialog, this has been disabled in the Optimised INI files. However, this can easily be reenabled again if required, steps to do that are covered in this document.
Under audio set-up:
-
Device Resolution/Driver Communication radio button is set to 24 bit.
Note: However, if your device supports 32 bit, then then Magix recommend using this option.
Under MIDI:
-
Retrospective MIDI recording is checked, and the buffer is set to 120 second's.
Note: there is more information on retrospective MIDI recording further down this document.
Under recording:
-
"Save each take in a new file" checkbox is checked.
Checking this box will cause Samplitude to save individual audio takes to separate wave files. This may be desirable because even if Samplitude crashes then you will still have individual takes rendered out into separate wave files.
-
Record button stops playback after standard recording is unchecked and it is required to uncheck this box when using the post recording feature.
-
The recording bit depth radio button is set to 32-bit (float) and this is done to achieve the highest possible recording quality. It's good to use 32-bit float files for editing and Samplitude edits files in 32-bit float internally by default.
-
Pre-recording. The buffer is set to 120 second's.
-
The pre-recording (ASIO only) check box is checked.
-
The post-recording length is set to 2 second's.
-
The post-recording check box is checked.
Note: If not familiar with pre and post audio recording then you can read about those features further down this document.
Under the import wav file options the following settings are selected:
-
"positioning in project Use sync positions (Timestamp) of waves" radio button is checked.
-
The "Positioning in project Load files to different tracks" radio button is checked.
in the Software Instrument Routing Window:
-
The "Multi-Channel create new Tracks for instrument outputs" radio button is checked.
-
Stereo/Mono (Standard) radio button is checked.
-
Audio/MIDI combined (tracks also send MIDI) checkbox is checked.
-
Don’t show the Audio return tracks in the arranger checkbox is not checked.
-
Show this dialog when inserting a new Software Instrument directly in the arranger checkbox is checked.
-
Show this dialog for VSTi Manager actions checkbox is checked.
-
The Extended Options checkbox is checked.
Note: this Window only appears as part of the process of inserting a softsynth.
You can if you wish download the Optimised INI files below:
The Optimised INI Files.zip
(24.4KB)
Other Options To Look At in System Options
We recommend that all available options are investigated. For example, Options in performance are not optimally configured. By default, Samplitude does not know how many CPU's are available. E.G. if running a Quad core then this setting should be set to 8 as you have 4 cores and 4 virtual cores. The default is 3. We recommend taking a look in "Extended Buffer Settings" and possibly optimising some settings which are outlined below. For instance, you may wish to change the preset to "MaxTracks". This can improve latency when running large projects with lots of softsynth's and hi track counts.
To do this perform the following steps:
-
Open Samplitude.
-
Press the letter Y on your keyboard to open system/options.
-
Press the letter E to navigate down to “Extended Buffer Settings.”
-
Tab over to the "Presets dialog box" and use the down-arrow key to choose the "MaxTracks" preset in the combo box.
-
Confirm this by routing your Jaws to PC cursor and perform a left click by pressing the forward slash key on the NumPad.
-
Hit the "Ok" button in options with the keystroke Alt and O to apply these settings.
We also recommend changing the preset in VST/Rewire to "Forced ASIO Buffers (Hybrid)". To do this perform the following steps:
-
Open Samplitude.
-
Press the letter Y on your keyboard to open system/options.
-
Press the letter V a couple of times to navigate down to “VST/Rewire.”
-
Tab to the "Presets dialog box" and use the down-arrow key to choose the "Forced ASIO Buffers (Hybrid)" preset in the combo box.
-
Confirm this by routing your Jaws to PC cursor and perform a left click by pressing the forward slash key on the NumPad.
-
Hit the Ok button in options with the keystroke Alt and O to apply these settings.
Changing to these settings should improve latency without dropouts which makes the time between pressing the spacebar to initiate/stop playback quicker. Furthermore, changing the above-mentioned settings can also allow you to then move the ASIO buffer even lower in the Control panel for your sound card. Tip: feel free to try using any of the various presets in the above-mentioned preset dialog boxes.
Backing UP Current Configuration And Samplitude’s INI Files
From native keystrokes to system settings configuration, Samplitudes INI files are where all of this information is kept. If you add further configuration, then these files will be updated. Therefore, one option to always have your current configuration backed up is to copy the following files to another location on your machine in case you need to restore them in the future. Samplitudes INI files are located here:
C:\Program Data\Magix\Samplitude version.
After making any configuration change that you wish to backup, please copy the following files to another location on your machine:
-
Sam_audio.ini which contains all of the audio settings used in 32-bit Samplitude.
-
Sam.ini which contains various settings for 32-bit Samplitude.
-
Sam.TBX2 which contains all of the toolbar layouts required for 32-bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
-
Sam_vis.ini, all of the Window layout information required for 32-bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
-
Sam_x64_audio.ini which contains all of the audio settings used in 64 bit Samplitude.
-
Sam_x64.ini which contains various settings for 64 bit Samplitude.
-
Sam_x64.TBX2 which contains all of the toolbar layouts required for 64 bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
-
Sam_x64_vis.ini, all of the Window layout information required for 64 bit Samplitude that Samplitude Access uses.
Tip: if Samplitude is not working as expected , then copy your backed up files back into this location and overwrite any existing files with the same name if they have been re-created with a restart of Samplitude.
Note the Samplitude Access development team shall not be held liable or responsible in any way in the event that something goes wrong with the backing up or restoration of INI files.
Backing UP Your Current Configuration In An INZ File

-
After the scan has finished, press Alt plus O to Ok this dialog. Your VST's should now be available .
Fixing Issues With Samplitude Locating VST's
Sometimes there can be issues with Samplitude detecting VST plug-ins. To fix this do the following:
-
Make sure samplitude isn't running and remove the Vstplug-ins.0 and the Vstplug-ins.ini files from your:
\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X\Folder.
-
Open Samplitude.
-
Start a new project or go to one that has an empty track.
-
Press B to open the Plugin Browser Window.
This will force a VST rescan and hopefully find everything. This may take a while if you have a lot of VST's. You may be able to see it scanning by either looking around with the Jaws cursor or setting Jaws to "Say all".
Altering The VstPlugins.ini File To Show More VST plug-ins
When using Samplitude it is possible that on some rare occasions you may not see all VST plug-ins such as all of your VST3 plug-ins. If you feel that this is the case then you may wish to look at a couple of options with regard to your VST plug-ins in the:
VstPlugins.ini
File. This file is in your:
%programdata%\Magix\Samplitude Pro X5 Suite
folder
Note: You can access this folder by going to the run dialog with windows key plus r, typing or pasting the above path in there and pressing enter.
The default text looks like this:
DirectoryRecursionDepth=1
DirectoryDisplayDepth=1
Changing both entries to more than 1 will cause Samplitude to scan further into the file folder structure where your VST plug-ins are installed. E.G. these entries can be changed so that they look like this:
DirectoryRecursionDepth=2
DirectoryDisplayDepth=2
Enabling Samplitude's Plug-in Menu Rather Than Using The Plug-in Browser
It is possible to use Samplitude's plug-in menu, which was previously used to insert plugins, rather than the plug-in browser. Performing the following steps will enable both methods:
-
Press the Windows key and the letter R to open the "Run" dialog box.
-
Now type:
%programdata%\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X6 Suite
Note: Replace "X5 Suite" with the version of Samplitude you have. E.g. X4 Suite or X5 Suite.
And press the Enter key. We are now in the folder where the Sam.ini and Sam_x64.ini files reside. The plug-in menu entry needs to be added to the version of Samplitude X you are using. E.G. Sam_x64.ini File in the 64-bit version of Samplitude and: Sam.ini In the 32 bit version of Samplitude. If you run both versions on a 64 bit system then you shall have to update both INI files. In this example, we shall amend the: Sam_x64.ini File.
-
Locate the: Sam_x64.ini File.
-
open it in NotePad by pressing the Enter key.
-
Look for the following text by either navigating to it or pressing the keystroke Control plus F in order to open the Find option in Notepad.
[Factors]
-
Press the End key to navigate to the end of the line.
-
Press the Enter key to insert a blank line.
-
Type:
FxBrowserOptions=1
-
Press Control S to save the ini file that we have just Altered.
-
Press Alt F4 to close the Samplitude Pro X Suite folder.
The next time Samplitude is opened you will have the old plug-in menu back.
Installing Additional Magix instrument's
If Samplitude has not been installed using the DVD, or you have not downloaded the Samplitude Pro X Suite content pack.ISO, then not all instrument's and content are installed by default. To remedy this, do the following:
-
When in the arranger, Use the keystroke Alt H to access the help menu.
-
Press the letter D until Jaws says, "Download instrument's and Sounds", press the spacebar and check all of the instrument's and sound packs that you wish to download.
Note: If you have purchased Samplitude Pro X or Samplitude Pro X Suite then Independence or Independence Pro is added to the "Download instrument's And Sounds list. However, it is not included in the 30 day fully functional Samplitude Pro X or Samplitude Pro X Suite demo. All installers including the one for Independence are automatically run and in the case of Independence, the VST's and other files required to run Independence are put in place. When all of the installers apart from Independence are run all of the data is placed in the location where you chose to install soundpools. The location may look something like this:
\MAGIX\Common\MxSynth
Magix will download all data including the Independence installer to the following location:
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\MAGIX Downloads\Installationsmanager
Note: You can access this folder by going to the run dialog with windows key plus r, typing or pasting the above path in there and pressing enter.
In the event that any installer is not run, then you can obtain the files from the above-mentioned location and install them manually.
Installing Independence Or Independence Pro Content
Samplitude Pro X ships with Independence which includes a 12GB sample library. When purchasing Samplitude Pro x Suite you receive Independence Pro which contains a 64.8GB library. To install Independence in the correct location, perform the following steps:
-
When Independence is launched, the first time it is run you may be presented with the Independence Content Installer.
If not this is located in the start menu under programs magix Independence or in the case of Samplitude Pro x Suite, programs magix Independence Pro 3.5 VST-Plugins. This installer will install the content for Independence. If you have problems locating the above-mentioned entry in your start menu, look in the following locations for the installer:
64 bit:
c:\programfiles\VSTplugins\MAGIX\Independence\VSTplugins64
32-bit:
c:\programfiles(x86)\VSTplug-ins\MAGIX\Independence\VSTplug-ins32
You can choose which installation suits your needs, for example DVD install if you have disks or the Samplitude DVD, or online install if you still need to download the content or choose volume if you already have downloaded the content.
The next step is extremely important. If you don't do this the content will be downloaded and installed to your c drive default location.
-
You need to tab to the choose button, route your jaws cursor to your pc cursor and perform a left click. You will be presented with a window where you can select where you want to install the content. After you navigate to your install location, you must tab to the open button and once again route your cursor and perform a left click.
-
Now the correct path is set, and you need to click on install. Note you can quit the installer at any time. just make sure you choose the yes option on both questions when quitting. When resuming just launch the installer again and choose continue.
Setting The Library Path IN Independence And Independence Pro
Note: this step is only required if you already have the content downloaded and you don't need to run the installer again.
-
insert Independence on to a track.
-
When inside the plug-in UI, press Control plus number 7 on the numbers row for the Preference tab.
-
Press the Jaws keystroke Control plus Alt plus B to add a library, a dialog will open.
-
Brows to the location where the image files are stored E.G:
E:\MAGIX\Independence Libraries\Independence Pro
-
After navigating to the install location you must locate the:
image files Folder, locate the "open" button, route your Jaws to PC cursor and perform a left click.
If you don't want to change the library location using the scripts, then once you have moved the data to the location you want to move it to, then you will need to do the following:
-
By using the run dialog box navigate to the following folder:
%ProgramData%\MAGIX\Independence Libraries\libraries\magix.independence.pro3.audio
-
Open the following file in notepad:
library.xml
-
When the file is open in notepad. It will look something like this:
xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?
library name="Independence PRO Library" vendor="MAGIX"
version="3.0.1" guid="magix.independence.pro3.audio"
locationE:\MAGIX\Independence Libraries\Independence Pro library libraries
Tip: the line that starts:
location
Is the line we need to edit.
-
Edit the file path to point to where the content has been moved .
Getting Started With Samplitude Access (the basics)
Getting Started With Samplitude Access
There is information below that will get you up and running with Samplitude access and Samplitude, but please remember, this is just touching the surface of what you can do, as it's impossible to document everything.
The approach is to try and give you a good understanding of the basics. This should enable you to continue your journey in learning Samplitude with the scripts.
Here I will inform you about known issues in the Track Editor with the new native accessibility in Samplitude X7. It's hoped that these issues will be addressed in a future update, but in the meantime this accessibility has been introduced to allow users to experience how things work.
Known issues:
1. Moving up or down a track is currently only available when on the volume control in the main section. In order to update the information on the track:
A. Press up/down to move to another track.
B. Tab or shift tab to another control and then back to the previous control, the information on the track should be updated.
2. Pressing any shortcut key like alt plus S for solo, alt plus M for mute etc is currently disabled, as performing these keystrokes do not move you to the control, they will only activate the control without any feedback. If you want to still use these controls until they are addressed:
A. Pass the key through by pressing jaws key plus 3 on the numbers row.
B. Press the keystroke in question.
3. Currently the "lock" control does not report the state.
A Note On How Samplitude Access Is Designed
Samplitude Access is an accessibility solution that's designed to help you work within the Samplitude Pro X environment. The key concept is that it facilitates normal operations that are needed in order to achieve a range of tasks.
This can be through the use of specific keystrokes, customised scripting or simply by giving feedback. Most importantly though, it attempts to work as closely as a sighted person would work at every level. For example, in the majority of areas, it is not helping you to make things easier, it is simply giving us access and the needed feedback to complete a task. Please remember this, as it will really help you understand when learning Samplitude.
Samplitude Access has been designed to have its own set of keystrokes in many cases, but this is because we need so many, that some logic had to be applied. However, these keystrokes still execute the same actions as for a sighted user, so following Samplitudes help documentation or getting help from a sighted user, is still relevant.
Getting Help When Using Samplitude Access
-
Installing Samplitude Access gives us access to a number of help documents, including a WhatsNew.html, a Keystrokes.html and the ReadMe.html that you're currently reading here. These files reside in:
C:\Program Files\Samplitude Access/the version of Samplitude you're using.
-
When in Samplitude, pressing jaws key plus F1 once will launch this read me, pressing twice will launch the Keystrokes document.
-
When in Samplitude, press jaws key plus H once for specific page help, (the page you're currently on) or twice to open a list of Samplitude Access help topics.
-
When in Samplitude, many pages like the VIP/Arranger and the Object Editor have keyboard help available. Press jaws key plus the number 1 on the numbers row to turn on/off keyboard help. This way, you can press combinations of keys and get a description of what they do.
-
Press Control plus jaws key plus T in any window to hear your location. Press twice quickly in the VIP/Arranger to hear the loaded project or twice quickly in the Plugin dialog to hear the loaded plugin.
The VIP/Arranger Basics
The VIP/Arranger window is your main/central place for working in Samplitude. It displays your tracks, folders, aux sends, submix buses, timeline, inserted plugins, the time/range/object information, all Controls such as solo, mute, record, volume, pan etc and much more.
Saving and selecting a workspace
Samplitude allows you to save and load different workspaces, depending on the task at hand. This is useful when a sighted person wishes to use samplitude with their own particular workspace. As Samplitude Access uses a specific workspace, we recommend saving this workspace immediately after installing Samplitude Access. This way, you can easily load this workspace when needed, e.g. after a Samplitude update, as some configuration settings can be changed after performing the update.
Note: These options are only available in Samplitude X6.
To save and load a workspace, due the following:
-
Go to the View/Workspace/Save a workspace menu option from the Arranger Window.
-
Press enter. A dialog will open, so give the workspace a name and press enter.
Note: Important, always save this file in the default location:
C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X6/X5 Suite\Workspaces
-
After saving this workspace, you can load it by going to the View/Workspace/Select a workspace menu option from the Arranger Window.
Jaws Verbosity Options
Samplitude Access has many verbosity options that can be configured, depending on what feedback is required to be spoken or not. To access these verbosity options,
-
Press jaws key plus V when in the VIP/Arranger.
-
Use the up/down-arrow keys to move through the available options.
-
Press the spacebar to toggle an option on/off
-
Press enter to close and keep any changes.
Some available options are:
-
Help messages. If this is on, then jaws will speak help messages when working in Samplitude. This is a great option to have enabled when starting out. Equally, turning it off cuts down on any verbose speech.
-
Descriptive times. If this is on, then jaws will announce times more efficiently. It will also prefix each segment of the time field with the name of that field. E.G. Bar1, Beat1, Tick1. If it's off, then times will be spoken in full. E.G. 001:001:001.
-
Midi verbosity options include items such as the midi note, velocity, midi identification number, note length etc. Configuring these options is very useful when in the Midi editor when using the Control plus left/right keystrokes, as you can get instant feedback on specific aspects of the midi.
-
Play Sounds. This enables you to replace some spoken messages with sounds. Currently, there are only a handful of sounds included, but this can be useful when you get used to what is happening and only require a sound to confirm an action.
Note: There are many more verbosity options to explore, so remember to check them all out and get Samplitude Access configured to your own way of working.
Braille In Samplitude
Samplitude Access includes braille that gives support for the following areas of Samplitude:
-
Track name, mute, solo and record Controls.
-
Time position with BBT and HMSMS format support.
-
ACT, Max and RMS meters.
Note: For a full/in depth explanation of how braille is incorporated into Samplitude with the samplitude Access scripts, check out the:
Braille support document
Sounds When Using Samplitude Access
In some cases, it isn't always necessary to have messages spoken by Jaws, but often some kind of audible feedback is useful. In Samplitude Access V9.0, we have introduced a few sounds that give us the audible feedback we require to confirm an action, instead of spoken feedback. These are:
-
A sound when tabbing and Shift/tabbing.
-
A sound to indicate all objects on a track have been selected when pressing shift plus A.
-
A sound to indicate no objects are on a track when pressing shift plus A.
-
Sounds for the zoom ratio when pressing Control plus left/right arrows.
-
A sound to confirm an object is selected and zoomed to the correct ratio when pressing the letter "Z".
-
Sounds when opening and closing FXMode.
Note: sounds can be enable/disabled in verbosity options by pressing jaws key plus V when in the VIP/Arranger. Equally, feel free to make your own sounds if you wish, but remember to keep the same file names.

-
Press jaws key plus Control plus left arrow to hear the current range start info.
-
Press jaws key plus Control plus numpad 5 to hear the current range length info.
-
Press jaws key plus Control plus right arrow to hear the current range end info.
Note: For object and range information, duplicate Controls are available for laptop users tied to the jaws key plus F5 through to f8 keys. Please see the help for details.
Naming Multiple Tracks With The Track Name Field Open
It is possible to name multiple tracks in Samplitude by performing the following steps:
-
When in the VIP/Arranger with a project open, open the track name edit field with Alt plus N.
-
Type in a name for that track.
-
Now press the Up or down-arrow keys to navigate to the next track.
-
Repeat until all tracks are named.
-
Once finished renaming tracks, press the Enter key to close the track name field.
Accessing Track Properties And Selecting Audio/Midi Inputs/Outputs In The VIP/Arranger
When tabbing across Controls on a track strip, we can open the Controls context menu by pressing Control plus the applications key. This gives us access to a number of specific options, depending on which Controls menu has been opened. For example,
-
When on the solo or mute Control, press Control plus the applications key to open its context menu. In here there are many associated options, including the audio output for that track.
-
When on the record Control, press Control plus the applications key to open it's context menu. In here there are many associated options, including the audio input for that trac if it's an audio track, or midi inputs if it's a midi track.
Note: Pressing the applications key in the VIP/Arranger will open the Track Properties context menu, which contains many options associated with tracks in Samplitude.
Accessing System Settings
To access Samplitudes system settings, press the letter "Y" when in the VIP/Arranger. Here we can configure many aspects of samplitude, including choosing various options such as selecting audio and midi devices/inputs/outputs and scanning for VST plugins.
If a more direct route is required to some of these settings, you can use the following keystrokes when in the VIP/Arranger:
-
Directly access midi settings by pressing Alt plus Shift plus 5.

-
Directly access Snap and Grid/General settings by pressing Alt plus Shift plus 7.
-
Directly access Metronome settings by pressing Alt plus Shift plus 8.
Getting Started With Samplitude
Objects And Ranges Overview
Ranges and objects may at first be a bit strange , but once you understand the differences and how they are used, you will be fine. Here's a little information on them that should make things clearer.
Ranges:
A range is kind of like a selection. However, we need to decide what we want that range to do. For example, we may want a range to
-
Loop a specific section of a project.
-
Apply it to a track or all tracks.
-
Automate the volume, pan or a plugins parameter etc.
-
Cut or copy a part of a track or all tracks.
-
Trim an object.
-
Set the range to a selected object.
To speak the current range, press shift plus enter twice or jaws key plus end twice.
Objects:
Objects are the building blocks in Samplitude. In other DAW software, objects may be referred to as clips, or items. They can be imported audio, imported midi, recorded audio or recorded midi. These objects can be any size, you can have multiple objects on 1 track, but all of these objects connect together seamlessly. Understanding this concept is key. So, what can you do?
-
Cut, copy and paste objects.
-
Duplicate objects.
-
Mute objects.
-
Group/ungroup objects.
-
Edit the volume/gain, pan, EQ, pitch etc.
-
Add effects to objects.
-
Move objects.
-
Press control plus alt plus shift plus left/right arrow keys to nudge the selected object left/right step 1.
-
Press control plus alt plus shift plus left/right bracket keys to nudge the selected object left/right step 2.
Note: setting the amounts you can nudge an object can be done by pressing control plus alt plus shift plus J.
-
Extend the start/end points of objects.
-
Control the fades on an object.
-
Export objects.
Plus, much more.

There are many more object actions that can be performed on objects, please consult the help for details.
Objects And Zooming
Objects in Samplitude are displayed along the timeline and they can be any size. For example, they could be a few ticks/milliseconds long or the length of a project. So, how is all this data seen and how do we deal with this challenge as visually impaired/blind users? Well the answer is exactly the same way a sighted person would...and that's zooming.
Firstly, here's the recommended steps to take when selecting and working with objects.
-
When on a track with objects, press the letter Z to initiate an object selection.
Note: This will select the object nearest to your current position and automatically zoom to the correct zoom ratio.
-
Press alt plus right or alt plus left arrows to move to the next/previous object if available. Jaws will now speak objects as you move. If there are no more objects or only 1 object on the track, you will be informed.
-
Press shift plus enter or jaws key plus end to query the current selection at any time.
Note: alternatively, press control plus jaws key plus home, up arrow or page up to get the selected objects start, length and end respectively.
The above steps are highly recommended when you need to select specific objects, as the scripts will take care of the zoom ratio for you, making it easier and more efficient to move along different objects on the timeline/track.
However, you can still select objects with alt plus left/right arrow keys if you wish without first pressing the letter Z, but please be aware that if the object isn't visible, then you will have to change the zoom ratio that reveals any selected object. In such cases, pressing jaws key plus end to query a selection will inform you of the objects position. Also, please note, if all objects on a track have been selected with shift plus A, then any subsequent presses of alt plus left/right arrow keys will not select an object, as there is no next or previous object to select.
There are 4 zoom ratios available, all of which show different amounts of the timeline:
-
Zoom to 1 second=alt plus shift plus F1.
-
Zoom to 10 seconds=alt plus shift plus F2.
-
Zoom to 1 minute=alt plus shift plus F3.
-
Zoom to 10 minutes=alt plus shift plus F4.
Alternatively, pressing control plus left/right will cycle through all 4 zoom ratios.
As the names of the different zoom ratios suggests, they show specific amounts of the timeline, allowing the user to work easily with very small objects or see an overview of a full project. This makes it very easy for a sighted user to zoom in or out to edit any object, but it can make things confusing for a visually impaired or blind user, hence why we recommend using the above method of selecting objects.
Equally, understanding the relationship between the zoom ratio and what objects may or may not be visible is something we encourage you to explore.
Splitting Objects
As previously explained, objects are simply data, which is either imported or recorded. These objects can be very small or very large, but Samplitude allows us to work with any object, no matter the size.
There will be times when we want to work with a specific section of data and being able to split an object is very important. This is simple, just select the larger object you want to split, navigate to the position where you want the split and press the letter "T", that object will now be split into 2 further objects.
Note: after an object is selected, the object to the right of the split point is selected. If you wish to select another object to work with or delete then this can be done with Alt Left/Right Arrow keys.
Now, when we select the split object, we can adjust the gain, add EQ or add an effect for example. This then allows us to work on that specific object.
Trimming Objects
Sometimes we only want to delete the start and end points on an object. In order to do this, do the following:
-
Draw a range over the area of a selected object you want to trim.
Note: Please see the section on Ranges to read how to do this.
-
Press Control plus T to trim the object to the size of the range.
Duplicating Objects
Samplitude allows us to duplicate objects or duplicate the same object many times. One thing to note here, is that any duplicated object will include any crossfades associated with that object. If objects have been split with auto crossfade, then this adds a few ticks/millisecond's of fade on the object, resulting in a 1 bar object actually being something like 1 bar 13 ticks long.
Duplicating this object, would duplicate the crossfade as well, meaning with each duplication, the object is becoming out of sync with the tempo. Splitting objects without auto crossfade does not exhibit this behaviour. If you need the crossfade on an object, then it's probably better to copy/paste objects instead. This can be done via a range or specific copy/paste object functions.
Grouping And Ungrouping Objects
Grouping objects together is a great way to have Control over a number of objects at once. For example, if we have 10 objects in a group, then every time we select 1 of these objects, all in that group, (the other 9), are also selected, making it very easy to edit all of these objects without having to edit each object individually.
we can have as many groups as we wish, and it's even possible to have groups inside of other groups. Whenever an object is selected that belongs to a group, jaws will announce the group number, making it very easy to keep track of what object is in what group.
Firstly, we need to select the objects we want to add to a group. This is done in a couple of different ways, but we shall outline below how it's done via the Object Manager, as the most efficient way requires further knowledge of using object selection. You can read more about objects in the:
Working With Objects Document.
Selecting objects to group in the Object Manager.
The Object Manager is a dedicated area of Samplitude which gives us a full overview of what objects are on what specific tracks. All objects are listed below the track. We can open the object Manager with Control plus Shift plus O from the VIP/Arranger. One thing that will help us greatly, is if we get into the habit of naming objects. This way, identifying what objects we want to work with will be easy.
To do this in the VIP/Arranger Window, press Control plus N on a selected object. In the Object Manager, press the Applications key on an object and enter on rename object.
When in the Object Manager/ object list:
-
Pressing the Up/down-arrow keys takes us through all the tracks and their associated objects.
-
Pressing enter on a track will toggle it open/closed, showing or hiding any associated objects respectively.
-
Pressing Enter on an object will select/unselect it.
-
Use the Jaws keystroke Alt plus G to hear what objects are currently selected to group.
Note: extremely important, once all objects are selected that you wish to add to a group, when back in the VIP/Arranger Window, press Control plus G to group them.
Now, whenever you select 1 of these objects, all objects in the group will be selected. Jaws will also announce the group number followed by the object name.
Ungrouping Objects
When it comes to ungrouping objects, there are a few choices.
-
When an object in the group is selected, pressing Control plus U will ungroup all objects from that group.
-
When an object in the group is selected, pressing Control plus Shift plus Alt plus U will execute the "temporary ungroup all objects". This means all objects are removed from the group, but they can be re-grouped by repeating the above-mentioned keystroke on 1 of these objects.
-
When an object in the group is selected, pressing Control plus Alt plus U will execute the "temporary ungroup object from group". This means that object is removed from the group, but the object can be re-grouped by repeating the above-mentioned keystroke on that object. This is useful if quickly wanting to perform a specific edit on 1 object that was in a group.
Setting up Samplitude To Record Multiple Objects Ungrouped
To do this perform the following steps:
-
Open the snap-grid settings accessed with the Samplitude keystroke, Alt plus Shift plus 7.
-
Tab to the "Recording group objects after multirecord check box" and uncheck it with the spacebar.
-
Press the keystroke Alt and the letter O to hit the "OK" button.
Tip: it is possible to make this setting permanent. This can be done by Shift tabbing back 8 times from the "Recording group objects after multirecord check box" to the "Save as default" button.
Ungrouping Objects After Recording On Multiple Tracks
When recording in Samplitude on multiple tracks, by default all objects are grouped. This applies whether they are audio or MIDI objects. To ungroup them do the following after recording:
-
In the VIP/Arranger Window, navigate to one of the tracks that's just been recorded on.
-
Select the object with the Samplitude keystrokes Alt left arrow or Alt Right arrow.
-
Press the Samplitude keystroke Control U to ungroup the objects.
Note: for in depth information on working with Objects please read the:
Working With Objects Document
Ranges
Drawing And Removing Ranges
Drawing a range means we are marking between points or specifying points along the timeline. For example, if we have our transport set to move by bars, (we are not going into that right now),
-
Holding the Shift key down and pressing right arrow will draw a 1 bar range with each press.
-
Alternatively, holding Shift and pressing the left arrow will reduced the range by 1 bar.
-
Pressing Control plus 1 through 5 will draw a 1 beat range, 2 beat range or 4 beat range etc.
-
If at the start of a project, pressing Shift plus end will draw a range over the full project.
-
Equally, pressing Shift plus home will draw a range from the current position to the start of the project.
-
Adding the Shift key to F2 draws a range to the previous marker.
-
Adding the Shift key to F3 draws a range to the next marker.
-
to remove a range, press Alt plus Shift plus backspace.
Note: it's also possible to extend the range start and end points, please consult the help for more details.
Setting A "from And Thru" Range
It's possible to set a "from and thru" range. This is achieved through Jaws scripting and is not a Samplitude feature. To do this:
-
Press Control plus 9 to set the start point.
Note: The scripts will create a small range automatically, so that it's possible to extend that range to the end point.
-
Navigate to the point where you want the selection/range to end.
-
Press Control plus 0 to set the end point, you now have that specific selection/range drawn.
Note: Once you've set your from and thru points, you can:
-
Move the playback marker to the "from" (start) of the range by pressing Control plus dash.
-
Move the playback marker to the "thru" (end) of the range by pressing Control plus equals.
-
Set that selection/range to the current track to copy/cut etc
-
Set that selection/range to all tracks to copy/cut etc
-
Set that selection/range to selected objects.
Setting A "from And Thru" Range With Markers
An Alternative way to set a "From and Thru" range would be to use 2 markers. To do this:
-
Set a marker at the "from" position. For this example, we'll press Shift plus 1.
-
Navigate to the point where you want the "thru" position and set another marker. For this example, we'll press Shift plus 2.
Note: This method only works if no other markers are between the 2 markers you've just set.
-
Press "1" to move to marker 1 (your from position) and press Shift plus F3 to draw the range from marker 1 to marker 2 (your thru position).
Applying a Range
Applying a range means we want that range to be set to a selected object, a track or all tracks. Remember, when we draw a range, we then have to decide what we are using that range for. If we don't take the step to apply it to a track or all tracks for example, any further cut/copy actions will not work. So, after we have drawn a range,
-
To apply the current range to the selected object, press F9.
-
To apply the current range to the current track, press F10.
-
To apply the current range to all tracks, press F11.
Extending And Reducing The Range Bottom
Once a range has been drawn and applied to a track, it's then possible to extend that range bottom to include any further tracks below the currently selected track. Equally, you can reduce any extended range, allowing for multiple range selection over a number of tracks. Just to note, you can only extend/reduce the range bottom over the current track list, it's not possible to do this over non contiguous tracks. To extend the range bottom over tracks below the currently selected track, do the following:
For this example we have 5 tracks:
-
After drawing your range on track 1 and applying it to the track, press Shift plus down arrow to extend the range bottom to include track 2.
-
Press Shift plus down arrow again to extend the range bottom to include track 3. You now have your range over tracks 1, 2 and 3.
Note: Any action you now take, such as cutting, copying or deleting for example would affect tracks 1, 2 and 3.
-
If you now press Shift plus up arrow, you would reduce the range bottom off track 3, so the range is now only over tracks 1 and 2.
Any action you now take, such as cutting, copying or deleting for example would affect tracks 1 and 2.
Flipping A Range
Flipping a range means we are moving an existing range left or right. If we have a 1 bar range from bar 10 to 11 for example,
-
Pressing Control plus Alt plus Shift plus page up will flip that range left to bar 9, so that the range is now from bar 9 to 10.
-
Pressing Control plus Alt plus Shift plus page down will flip that range right to bar 11, so that the range is now from bar 11 to 12.
Recalling Ranges
It is possible to recall the last range in Samplitude. This means that we could for example, draw a range over a verse then navigate to a chorus and draw the second range. Once this is done pressing Control plus R toggles between the two drawn ranges .
Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Ranges
To cut, copy, or paste a range, use the hotkeys X, C, or V, respectively. To paste with ripple use Control plus V, which means sliding everything to the right to make room for what you are pasting.
Examples of deleting data after cutting/copying and how it works in specific situations. These examples look at how markers are affected, but are included in this section, as you first need to draw a range.
Example 1, a project with no markers and deleting a section of a track.
-
Draw a range.
-
Press F10 to assign it to the track.
-
Press delete.
This should work, along with any cut or copy operation.
Example 2, a project with markers and deleting a section of a track.
-
Draw a range.
-
Press F10 to assign it to the track.
-
Press delete.
The result here is that if there are any markers within the range you've drawn, then those markers are deleted, but the audio/data is not deleted.
What you need to do is press delete one more time to delete the audio/data. So:
-
Draw a range.
-
Press F10 to assign it to the track.
-
Press delete, this will delete the marker in the range.
-
Press delete again and it will delete the audio/data under the range.
If you only want to delete the audio/data and not the markers, then select the object or all objects. So:
Example 3, a project with markers and deleting a section of a track without deleting markers.
-
Draw a range.
-
Press control A for all objects or shift A for the objects on the track.
-
Press f10 to assign it to the track.
-
Press delete.
This way the delete action is honoured without affecting the markers. Also cut and copy commands are not affected either way.
Markers
VIP Markers
VIP Markers in Samplitude allow us to mark specific points along the timeline. For example, we may want a marker at bar 10, another at bar 20 and another at bar 30. Once these markers are set, we can press a keystroke to jump to that position.
We have 10 keystrokes that we can assign to specific points along the timeline, keystrokes to move us to the next/previous marker and the ability to add further markers, which are not assigned to a keystroke.
-
Press Shift plus 1 through 0 to set markers 1 to 10.
-
Press 1 through 0 to move to that specific marker.
-
Press F2 to move to the previous marker.
-
Press F3 to move to the next marker.
-
Press f4 to set a marker with auto number.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus slash to set a marker with a name.
-
Press Shift plus F4 to delete the marker that is currently in focus.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus f4 to delete all markers.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus M to toggle the Marker Manager.
Note: The Marker Manager is where all VIP markers are listed and accessed.
Audio Markers
When we set an audio marker, we're marking the actual audio. If we move any audio that was previously marked, then that marker will move with it. This is very useful when working with audio objects and if we need to keep specific points within that object.
However, audio markers do not have keystrokes assigned to enable us to jump to those markers, we need to access these markers in the Audio Marker Manager.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus K to set an audio marker.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus K to toggle the Audio Marker Manager.
The transport Console Window
The Transport Console Window is where we can choose a recording mode, change the tempo, change the time signature, toggle items such as the metronome on/off, loop on/off etc.
To learn all the available keystrokes, please explore the help and perhaps turn on "help messages" in the verbosity options, so that these keystrokes become more familiar, but here's a few to get started with,
-
Toggle the Transport Console Window with Control plus Shift plus T.
-
Tab and Shift plus tab along the available Controls.
-
Press enter to activate a Control.
-
Press Control plus applications key to open any Controls associated menu.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus C to toggle the click on/off.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus L to toggle the loop on/off.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus P to edit the tempo.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus U to edit the time signature.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus R to open the audio recording mode menu.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus D to open the midi recording mode menu.
Inserting A Folder And Working With Folder Tracks In The VIP/Arranger
When working with multiple objects across tracks it may in some instances be easier to select the tracks in question and add them to a folder. This allows us to treat the folder as a single track. Normal editing operations such as cut, copy delete, mute solo etc can be used on a folder track.
Moving tracks in to and out of folders is also possible in the track Manager and this is covered in this document.
Inserting a folder track and copying/cutting tracks to move into the folder.
-
When in the VIP/Arranger, press Control plus Shift plus 6 on the numbers row to insert a folder track. The folder will be inserted above the track that is currently selected.
Note: This folder is currently empty, so it can't be open/closed.
-
Navigate to a track that you wish to put into the folder and press Alt plus C to copy it, or Alt plus X to cut it.
-
Navigate back to the folder track and press Alt plus V to paste the track into the folder.
Note: if the track that is being copied/cut has effects, objects or automation for example on it, then a dialog will open asking if you want to copy across certain track settings. So, make your choices, then continue.
-
Repeat this process with all of the tracks that you wish to move into the folder.
-
Now, navigate to the folder track and press Control plus Alt plus F to toggle it open/closed. When it's open, we are able to arrow through all of the tracks in the folder, when it's closed, these tracks will be hidden within the folder.
Note: Having tracks within a folder is a good way to keep your VIP/Arranger window tidy, especially if you have groups of tracks that would benefit from being together. You could name them appropriately, and for example, you could have a percussion folder, a strings folder, a vocals folder or synth folder. All tracks within a folder are available to cut/copy/paste using a range drawn over that folder
Moving Tracks In to/out of A Folder In The Track Manager
Assuming we have inserted a folder track above track 1 in the VIP/Arranger,
Moving tracks into a folder:
-
When on the track list, use the down-arrow key to navigate to track 1, this will be selected.
-
As track 1 is already selected, press and hold the Shift key and press down-arrow to select tracks 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Note: extremely important, any tracks we would like to add to a folder have to be in order, E.G. tracks 2, 3, 4 and 5 etc. In other words, we can't move tracks 2, 4, 6 and 7 using this method. Tip we can check which tracks that are selected at any time by pressing Jaws key plus up-arrow.
-
As our final selection with Shift plus down-arrow was track 5, press Control plus up-arrow to move all of the tracks that we have selected into the folder located above track 1.
Note: Alternatively, do the opposite. In other words, if the folder is below the tracks we want to move, then select the tracks above and press Control plus down-arrow to move those tracks down into the folder.
Removing tracks from a folder.
-
When on the track list, arrow down to the first track in the folder.
-
Press Shift plus down-arrow to select all the remaining tracks in the folder.
Tip: we can check which tracks are selected at any time by pressing Jaws key plus up-arrow.
-
Press Control plus down-arrow to move the selected tracks down out of the folder or press Control plus up-arrow to move the selected tracks up above the folder.
The folder track can now be safely remove/deleted by arrowing to it and pressing delete.
FX Mode, Inserting SoftSynths and Audio Plugins
In Samplitude, we work with softsynths and plugins. We will need to insert them, remove them and configure them. Below are some tips on how this can be achieved, along with how FX Mode works.
Note: When launching Samplitude for the first time and loading an instrument, it is necessary to first engage the transport by pressing the spacebar to start the audio engine. Failure to do this will mean no audio will be heard.
FX Mode
FX Mode is a samplitude access feature that allows us to access and navigate any loaded plugins on a track. Without FX Mode, locating plugins would be difficult.
-
When in the VIP/Arranger, open/close FX Mode with the "G" key.
-
When FX Mode is open:
-
Use up/down-arrow keys to move through any loaded plugins.
-
Press the applications key to open the FX menu. E.G. press the applications key on a selected plugin, enter on "No Effect" in the menu to remove that plugin.
-
Press enter on a selected plugin to open it.
-
Press Alt plus M to toggle mute/bypass for a selected plugin.
-
If an instrument is loaded, press Control plus 1 for the instrument's menu.
-
If an instrument is loaded, press Control plus 2 for the channel menu.
-
If an instrument is loaded, press Control plus 3 for transpose.
How To Insert A Softsynth Or Audio Effect
To insert a Softsynth or audio effect, perform the following steps:
-
Navigate to the track you wish to insert a softsynth or audio effect on.
-
We now have 2 choices.
-
Press the letter B to open the plugin browser.
-
Press the "F" key to open the FX menu, then arrow down to plugin browser and press enter.
-
When the Plugin Browser opens, if inserting a softsynth,
-
Tab over to "instrument's" and make sure it's checked.
-
Tab over to the tree view, which contains a list of all installed instrument's/plugins.
Note: When tabbing to the tree view, jaws will probably say "Magix Synth". Equally, there maybe times jaws says nothing at all, but don't worry, this is where we need to be, and we will be able to navigate through this tree view.
If inserting an audio plugin,
-
Tab over to "Effects" and make sure it's checked.
-
Tab over to the tree view, which is a list of all installed instrument's/plugins.
Note: When tabbing to the tree view, jaws will probably say "Insert effects". Equally, there maybe times jaws says nothing at all, but don't worry, this is still where we need to be, and we will be able to navigate through this tree view.
-
Arrow down through the available plugins and select the plug-in you require.
As this is a tree view, we will need to open/close any branches/folders with the left/right arrow keys. Unfortunately, at the moment jaws will not announce if a branch/folder is open or closed, but it will soon become clear how this works. First letter navigation can be used to jump to plugins starting with that letter.
-
When on the plugin you require, press enter to open it.
-
Now, 1 of 4 things will happen:
-
The instrument or plugin will open in the plugin dialog.
-
The instrument or plugin will open in the Parameter dialog.
-
If it's an instrument that can have multiple outputs, then the Sofsynths Routing Window will open.
-
If it's an audio effect with its own dedicated dialog box, then that dialog will open.
The Plugin And Parameter Dialogs
As mentioned above, an instrument or plugin can open in either the Plugin Dialog or the Parameter Dialog, these are the 2 main windows where we can work directly with that plugin. The following keystrokes are available in both dialogs,
-
To swhich between these 2 windows,
-
Press Alt plus L for the Plugin menu, arrow down to "Plugin Dialog" and press enter to swhich to the Plugin Dialog.
-
Press Alt plus L for the Plugin menu, arrow down to "Parameter Dialog Automation" and press enter to swhich to the Parameter Dialog.
-
Press Alt plus P for the Programs menu.
This is where any presets for a plugin are if available.
-
Press Alt plus B for the Bypass menu if available.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus equals to move to the next preset if available.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus dash to move to the prior preset if available.
The Plugin Dialog
The Plugin Dialog is basically that plugins native UI, meaning it will display the user interface. This window is often inaccessible and can only be made accessible with 3rd party scripts or via HotSpotClicker. However, Samplitude does include further scripts for Kontakt, Blackhole and Independence when in this window.
Samplitude Access also comes with HotSpotClicker connected whenever you're in the Plugin Dialog, which allows users to create any access to that plug with HSC. It also comes with optional HSC sets that you can use. If you want to swhich to HSC when in the Plugin Dialog, then press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus windows plus H to toggle between HSC and the samplitude Access scripts.
Note: For more information on HotSpotClicker, please see further down this document.
The Parameter Dialog
The Parameter Dialog is basically a list of all automatable parameters that the inserted plugin has available. In the majority of cases, we can access all of these parameters and adjust their values in this window.
To navigate parameters, adjust their values and get real time values, do the following,
-
The Parameter Dialog is split into 3 tabs:
The parameter name/list.
-
The edit field, where values are adjusted.
-
The "Auto" checkbox, which is associated with automation.
Tabbing/Shift tabbing will cycle through these Controls.
When on the parameter list, use up/down-arrows to move between available parameters.
If a parameter has a real time value; then jaws will speak this value after the parameter name. Equally, pressing jaws key plus numpad 5 will read this value when in the parameter list. Pressing jaws key plus up-arrow will also read the parameter name.
When on a parameter you wish to adjust, tab once to the edit field and use up/down-arrows, page up/down and Shift plus up/down-arrows to change the value.
This value is presented in a percentage, which isn't ideal, but we can read the real time values by doing the following, after making changes.
Shift plus tab back to the parameter list.
-
up-arrow or down-arrow to another parameter, then arrow back to the parameter in question. Jaws will now read the updated real time value, it is also available to us via the jaws key plus numpad 5 keystroke.
The Softsynth Routing Window
The Softsynth Routing Window is a window that will open whenever we insert a MultiTimbral instrument. We have the choice of inserting this instrument with multiple outputs, which then can be configured and routed within the instrument to correspond with the newly created tracks.
There are 3 routing options,
-
For simple routing, press Control plus 1.
-
For MultiTimbral, press Control plus 2.
-
For Multi Output, press Control plus 3.
Choosing which option is required will depend on your own personal needs, but please take time to explore what options are available to you with each of these 3 choices.
A Plugins Dedicated Dialog
If inserting 1 of Samplitudes native plugins, it may open in it's own dedicated dialog. In some cases, the accessibility will be limited, due to no scripting being done to fix tab orders. However, in many other cases, we have access to all the plugin Controls. Please bear this in mind and explore each dialog if needed.
Inserting A Softsynth With Multiple Outputs
In the insert Softsynths dialog box,
-
Choose the "multi-channel create new outputs for instrument outputs" radio button or MultiTimbral channel" radio button.
Note: These can be selected with Control plus 2 or Control plus 3.
-
Use the arrow keys to choose various radio button options such as "Stereo/mono, (standard), Always Mono, and Always Stereo.
-
Tab over and Check the "Extended Options" Check box to see all available options in this dialog box.
-
Tab over in this dialog box, and if necessary, uncheck the check box that says "Audio/MIDI combined (tracks also send MIDI)". Unchecking this box is required if you want to have the MIDI on a separate track.
Enabling Playback On A Softsynth
When back in the VIP/arranger after inserting a Softsynth, It may be necessary to do a couple of things to get audio going:
-
Important: check the record device for the Softsynth.
-
Tab to record and press Control plus applications to open the record context menu.
-
Check the correct midi device you want to use is selected.
-
Press the spacebar to wake up the softsynth if necessary.
Note: Check to see if monitoring is on for this track. This can be toggled by pressing Control plus Alt plus Shift plus F, or by tabbing to monitoring, which will report its status.
How To Insert And Route Independence With Multiple Outputs-Drum Kit Example
Independence has many keystrokes that allow us to load instrument's and edit specific aspects of a patch. It also has been scripted to allow us to load multiple patches and assign more than 1 patch to an output. We can also split out some instrument's, so that each part of that patch has its own channel/output, which is useful, especially when working and mixing with drums.
For this example, we will load a drum kit and assign each part to a separate channel.
-
Load Independence with the multi-channel output routing.
Note: In the Plugin Browser, after checking "instrument's", selecting Independence from the tree view, press Control plus 3 when the SoftSynth Routing Window opens.
-
In Independence, for this example, press Control plus Alt plus L to open the Independence menu and navigate to/select Independence Pro instrument's/01-Acoustic Drum Kits/Drum Kit 01 sticks. This will load that drum kit.
-
Press Control plus 1 for the Quick Edit tab.
-
Now pressing Control plus down/up-arrows will cycle between "layers and edit Controls". When we move to "layers", we should here that this drum kit is loaded.
-
Press Control plus 2 for the Modules tab.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus C to turn on the "content" button.
Again, use Control plus up/down-arrows to cycle between "parts for routing and edit Controls". When on the "parts for routing, we shall hear that we are on the "snare drum", so:
-
Press Control plus Alt plus enter to open the snare routing menu.
-
In the menu, select "custom 1 stereo".
-
Again, use Control plus up/down-arrows to cycle between "parts for routing and edit Controls". When on the "parts for routing, use Control plus Alt plus up/down-arrows to move up/down this column and select "cymbals".
-
Once again, press Control plus Alt plus enter to open the cymbals routing menu.
-
This time select "custom 2 stereo".
-
Again press Control plus up/down-arrows to get to the "parts for routing", press Control plus Alt plus up/down to navigate this column and select "bass drum".
-
This time, in the menu, arrow down to "new custom channel" sub menu, open it with right arrow and select "stereo".
-
Repeat steps F and G for the remaining kit pieces, each time selecting a new custom stereo channel.
-
Now press Control plus 6 for the Mixer tab.
-
In the Mixer tab, press Control plus down-arrow to move to the first output and press Control plus Alt plus enter to open the menu.
-
Arrow down to the "stereo" sub menu and open it. We can see that the "stereo output 1" is selected. This means the first piece is already assigned to output 1, so close the menu.
Note: This was just to demonstrate where we select the outputs for individual pieces we have assigned a custom channel to.
-
Press Control plus down-arrow again, we shall move back to the first output menu, but this time, press Control plus Alt plus right arrow to move to the 2nd output menu.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus enter to open this menu, arrow down to the "stereo" sub menu, but this time select "stereo output 2".
-
Repeat steps 11 and 12 for the remaining kit pieces outputs. E.G. after pressing Control plus down-arrow, remember to press Control plus Alt plus right arrow to the 3rd output, 4th output and the 5th output, arrow down to the "stereo" sub menu but select "stereo output 3, 4 and 5".
Note: We always move to the first output with Control plus down-arrow in the Mixer tab, as this is our starting point, because prior to routing, each output is assigned to "stereo output 1". So, it would be confusing to know which output menu we're on. Also, we can use Control plus Alt plus left arrow when on these outputs.
-
Now, close Independence with Control plus F4. Back in the VIP/Arranger, the kit piece will be on the track you inserted Independence on, but each of the kit pieces will have their own output.
A good tip to find out which track has what kit piece assigned to it, is to record a test piece, solo each track and then rename that track accordingly.

Plugins Accessibility
In samplitude, there are a host of instrument and audio plugins that can be accessed. As explained above, these plugins can either open in the Plugin Dialog (their native plugin window), the Parameter Dialog or in a dedicated window/dialog.
Excluding the Parameter dialog, this means in order to access some plugins Controls, there sometimes needs to be specific scripting done to make this happen. In many cases, as in dedicated dialogs for example, you are able to tab around that dialog without any problems, but in other cases you may find you tab to a Control and you cannot move any further. This is because no scripting has been done and that dialog has a broken tab order.
It is hoped in the future that Magix will address these problems, or that Samplitude Access will add further scripting to make such plugins more accessible. However, in the vast amount of cases, you will find plugins accessible, because Samplitude Access has added specific scripting to get around this problem
For example, plugins like the EQ 116, Multi Band Dynamics, Multi Band Stereo Enhancer, SMax11, Distortion and Vocoder just to name a few, have all been made fully accessible. Please consult the help when in any plugin to get specific keystrokes help on what you can do when using these plugins.
The track Manager
The track Manager shows an overview of a projects tracs. It's a window where it's much more efficient to move tracks, re-order tracks or move tracks into folders. It also can give us specific feedback on the state of certain Controls.

Press Tab and Shift plus Tab to move through Controls.
-
Press the Delete key to remove the tracks that you have selected from the Track Manager and the VIP/Arranger.
The Object Editor
The Object Editor is where we can work with and edit midi or audio objects. This can include editing EQ, volume/gain, pan, fade times, fade types and pitch etc. The audio Object Editor is split into 3 separate tabs,
-
Effects tab.
-
Fades tab.
-
Time pitch tab.
The midi Object Editor is just 1 window. This window can be launched by opening the Object editor when a midi object is selected, or via the Midi Editor.
The available Controls in these tabs are too many to mention. Please take time to explore these windows, read the help and any other documentation to learn how to work with objects in the Object Editor, but here's a few getting started tips,
-
Toggle the Object Editor with Control plus O.
-
Press Control plus tab and Control plus Shift plus tab to cycle through all 3 tab/windows.
-
Press tab and Shift plus tab to move through Controls.
-
Use function keys F1 to F11 to jump to specific Controls within each tab.
The track Editor
The track Editor is similar to the VIP/Arranger, but with some different Controls available. We can access track specific Controls along the track strip and via dedicated menus. However, some of these menus are inaccessible, but it is not necessary to be able to access these menus, as we can access the same Controls from the VIP/Arranger accessibly.
It's recommended to only use the track Editor to access specific Controls and for the following reasons,
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus e to toggle the track Editor.
-
Press up/down-arrows to move through tracks.
-
Tab and Shift plus tab along the track strip to access Controls such as "Track name, Mono, Phase and Midi etc".
Note: Keystrokes are available for us in order to toggle these Controls, they are:
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus O to toggle mono on/off.
-
Press the letter "H" to toggle phase on/off.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus U to toggle automation read on/off.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus D to toggle midi on/off.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus I once to open the "Midi In" menu, press twice to open the "Midi Out" menu.
The track Aux Send Routing Window
The track Aux Send Routing window is where we access any inserted auxiliary buses sends. Samplitude access supports up to 8 auxiliary buses and gives us full access to all available Controls. When in the track Aux Send Routing Window:
-
Press Control plus Alt plus e to toggle the track Aux Send Routing Window.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus 1 through to 8 to move to Controls for auxiliary buses 1 through 8 if available.
Note: After moving to an auxiliary bus send, E.G. Control plus Shift plus 1 for auxiliary bus send 1:
-
Press tab and Shift plus tab to cycle through all Controls for that auxiliary bus.
-
Press the spacebar to check/uncheck Controls.
-
Press up/down-arrow keys, page up/down keys or simply type in a value when in an edit field.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus 9 to move to the main Controls.
Note: Press tab and Shift plus tab to cycle through Controls, press the spacebar to check/uncheck a Control and press enter to activate a button.
Submix Buses, Auxiliary Buses And Sends
Sub Mix Buses
A sub mix bus is a track in which we can route other tracks through. Imagine we have a drum kit with each piece on its own track. Routing each kit piece/track through a sub mix bus for example, allows us to
-
Control the volume, pan, mute or solo on all of the kit pieces at once.
-
Insert effects/plugins on to that sub mix bus and affect all of the kit pieces at once.
Inserting A Sub Mix Bus And Routing Tracks
To insert a sub mix bus and route a track through this bus, do the following:
When in the vIP/Arranger, press Control plus Shift plus 7 to insert a sub mix bus. A sub mix bus will be inserted with a name like "bus 1".
Note: Renaming sub mix buses is good practice, E.G. "drum bus".
Navigate to a track you wish to route through this bus.
Tab to the "solo" or "mute" Control on that track and press Control plus applications key to open the associated menu.
Arrow down to the newly inserted sub mix bus, (bus 1) and press enter. That track is now routed through this sub mix bus.
Auxiliary Buses/Sends
An auxiliary bus is a track that we can insert effects/plugins on to. These effects/plugins can then be Controlled via a send accessed through the tracks we wish to have that effect on. Imagine we have 2 vocal tracks that need a reverb, we can:
-
Enable the send on the first vocal track and set the send to have a very large amount of reverb on it.
-
Enable the send on the second vocal track and set the send to have a much smaller amount of reverb on it.
What's key here though, is that both vocal tracks are using the same reverb that is inserted on to an auxiliary bus.
Inserting An Auxiliary Bus and accessing Sends
As an example, we have 2 vocal tracks, To insert an auxiliary bus and access the inserted plugin sends on those tracks, do the following:
-
When in the vIP/Arranger, press Control plus Shift plus 8 to insert an auxiliary bus. An auxiliary bus will be inserted with a name like "aux 1".
Note: Renaming auxiliary buses is good practoce, E.G. "reverb aux bus".
-
For this example, insert/add a reverb on to this bus.
Note: For instructions on how to do this, please see the section "How To Insert A Softsynth Or Audio Effect".
-
Now with the auxiliary bus created and the effect inserted, navigate to the first vocal track in our example, E.G. vocal 1.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus E to open the Track Aux send Routing Window.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus 1 to move to the first auxiliary bus send we've just created. Jaws will announce the name of the auxiliary bus.
-
Tab once to the edit field, Jaws should say "off".
-
Tip: arrow down once and the value should default to "-100.00". Change this value to 0.00 and tab away from this field for changes to take effect.
Note: use the up/down-arrow keys, page up/down keys or simply type in this edit field to change the value.
-
Now, when we play the project by pressing Shift plus spacebar, vocal 1 should have a large reverb on it. If we want to reduce that amount, tab back to the edit field and adjust the value.
-
Close the track Aux send Routing Window with Control plus Alt plus E or Control plus F4.
-
Repeat steps 3 to 9 for the second vocal track. We will now have 2 different tracks using the same reverb inserted on an auxiliary bus with Control over each tracks send.
Any inserted effect on an auxiliary bus can be edited within the Plugin or Parameter dialog. Please be aware that any editing on a send is dependent on what values any particular effect is currently set to. E.G. inserting a reverb on to an auxiliary bus and then setting the wet mix to 100%, will affect how much signal is being sent to the associated send.
Automation
In Samplitude, we can automate everything from volume, pan, tempo and aux sends to any plugin's automatable parameters and midi CC. We can do this in a few different ways:
-
By adding automation nodes in the Automation Edit Dialog.
-
By automating a parameter in real time with a Controller.
-
By holding down Control plus Alt when on an automatable Control and using a physical mouse.
Note: This method requires the user to place the mouse on any automatable Control, but this can be done with volume and pan in the VIP/Arranger, as the mouse is already placed on this Control.
For an example, lets create a fade in by adding nodes and automating the volume Control in the Automation Edit Dialog.
-
In the VIP/Arranger, with an object loaded, press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus L to turn on the volume curve for that track.
We can access the automation menu to explore automation options, by pressing either Alt plus grave accent , or by pressing Control plus applications key on the volume curve Control on the track.
-
Navigate to the beginning of the track where the fade in will start.
-
Press Alt plus 1 to create a new automation node at this position, the Automation Edit Dialog will open.
Note: This inserts an automation node on the volume curve. Once this node is inserted, we can adjust the value, hence adjusting the curve.
When in the Automation Edit Dialog:
-
Press tab and Shift plus tab to move to the next and previous available node.
-
Press jaws key plus up-arrow to speak the position and value.
-
Press jaws key plus numpad 5 to speak the value and set focus to this Control.
-
In X6/X5 only, press jaws key plus down-arrow to speak the curve shape value and set focus to this Control.
-
In X6/X5 only, press Alt plus U to swhich back and forth between the curve shape presets and the node value Control.
Please consult the help on specific keystrokes to select a curve shape.
-
When in an edit field, press up/down-arrow keys, Shift plus up/down-arrow keys and page up/down keys to adjust the value or type in a value.
-
When on a node, adjust this value so it's something like -90.00.
Note: Values do not always mirror the Controls type. E.G. adjusting a value on an EQ will not report the frequency, but a value/range from approximately -90.00 to 90.00. This will mean some experimentation is needed to figure out what values need to be set.
-
Press enter to confirm and exit the dialog.
-
Now navigate to the position where you want the fade to end and press Alt plus 1 again to create a node at this position.
-
When on this new node, adjust the value accordingly. For this example, we'll set it back to 0.00.
-
Press enter to confirm and exit the dialog.
-
Now when we start the project from the beginning, we should have a fade in.
If you want to edit any existing nodes, press Alt Plus 2 to "Edit the next node". This will open the Automation Edit Dialog and allow you to select a node to adjust/edit. There are many more keystrokes available to us in the VIP/Arranger to copy, paste or delete curves. Please consult the help for more information.
Notes On Automation
Remember, we can automate different parameters and have multiple curves for these parameters, but only 1 curve is selected to edit at a time. Samplitude has track automation and object automation, but at the moment, only track automation is accessible to us.
Samplitude also has automation lanes, which allow more than 1 curve to be seen and edited at once. However, this visual display isn't accessible to us, as it requires the use of a mouse to edit the curves. The fully accessible way we work with automation in Samplitude is track automation.
Another thing we need to be aware of is the automation mode. If we create automation with a Controller for example, we will need to change the automation mode in order for the curve to be drawn, E.G. "overwrite. There are a number of automation modes. Please explore which mode suits your needs. Equally, assuming that you don't want to keep writing automation then after drawing the curve, the mode will need to be changed back to "read".
Below are a few tips on where to find parameters to automate, how to check if they are ready for automating and where to select an automation mode.
We can change the automation mode by:
-
Pressing Alt plus U in the VIP/Arranger and arrowing down to "Track Automation Mode sub menu".
-
Pressing Alt plus grave accent in the VIP/Arranger and arrowing down to "Automation Mode sub menu".
Selecting a parameter to automate:
-
Press Alt plus grave accent when in the VIP/Arranger. If no curve is selected, then the first option will be "No Effect", and this will be checked.
-
To be quicker here, up-arrow and we shall find options like:
-
Midi Controller sub menu.
-
Aux/Outputs sub menu.
-
Surround sub menu.
-
Tempo.
-
Pan.
-
Volume.
If you have plugins inserted that show their automatable parameters, then you will see these options in this menu.
For example, opening the "Midi Controller" sub menu and selecting "01 Mod Wheel", will select that parameter for automating. Now when we re-open the automation menu again with Alt plus grave accent and arrow down, we will find that "Midi Control/1 Mod Wheel" is checked. This means any automation we perform is creating a curve for the Mod Wheel/midi CC 01, as it's selected.
-
In order to automate another parameter, select it via the method above, you will find it will be checked when re-opening the automation menu.
The Crossfade Editor
The Crossfade Editor in Samplitude X7 has been totally re-designed and allows for precise editing of crossfades. For a full list of keystrokes available, please see:
the keystrokes.html document.
Arranger Track Meters And The Visualization Window
In Samplitude, you can read meters either from the Arranger Window or via the Visualization Window, but there is a difference to be aware of. These differences are:
-
In the Arranger, track meters are a coloured meter display that display colours from green to red, depending on the current levels.
and
-
In the Visualization Window, meters are displayed in numbered values.
In the Arranger Window.
-
Press F5 to speak the current coloured value running through the track.
Note: A mid/high yellow signal is a good solid level.
-
Press F6 to speak the current peak that has been played through the track.
-
Press f7 to go to the peak for the currently selected object.
-
Press F8 to speak the peak information for that selected object again.
In the Visualization Window, opened with control plus alt plus shift plus V.
-
Press F5 to open the Visualization context menu.
-
Press F6 to read the ACT meters.
-
Press F7 to read the MAX meters.
Press F8 to read the RMS meters.
Press F9 to reset the meters.
Tip: in order to read input meters from the Visualization Window, it is necessary to enable input monitoring on a track. To do that, press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus F to toggle monitoring.
Note: we understand this could be an issue for example, if you are using a microphone plugged into a mixer. Then we may not want to do this because it could cause a feedback loop. Unfortunately, this is currently unavoidable, as it's only possible to read input meters by enabling input monitoring.
If you don't want to use Samplitude's meters in the VIP, then you may wish to either download the accessible Peak meter from:
The Accessible Peak Meter page
or if using the Focusrite Saffire range of products, it is possible to read input meters using the HSC set in the Saffire Control panel.
Output meters are read in the same way and are displayed if input monitoring is disabled.
Midi In Samplitude
Working with midi in the VIP/arranger is much the same as working with audio. Actions like cutting, copying, pasting and duplicating objects etc is the same. However, for a great workflow when it comes down to editing midi, the Midi Editor is where we need to be, but first let's take a look at quantizing.
Quantizing Midi
Quantizing in Samplitude can be done during the actual recording or post recording. We can quantize midi on selected midi objects in the VIP/Arranger or in the Midi Editor. Let's take a look at how to quantize some midi in the VIP/Arranger and what options are open to us.
Quantizing midi after a recording.
-
After recording some midi, select that object.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus Q to open the Midi Quantize dialog.
Note: There are many quantize options in this dialog, but lets just choose a standard quantize value for this example.
-
Tab to the QGrid menu and press enter to open it.
This is where we would select the quantize strength. E.G. 4 (quarter note), 8 (8th note), 16T (16th triplet) etc.
-
Select "8" to set the QGrid to an 8th note.
Note: Setting a quantize value in this dialog will be your global set value. Meaning, any further quantizing will use this value for the quantize until it is changed to something else. Also, you can perform the quantize, along with many other options in here, but for this example, we will return back to the vIP/Arranger.
-
Press Control plus F4 to close this dialog.
-
Now, press Control plus Q to perform the quantize on the selected midi.
Note: Any further midi objects that are selected will be quantized with this 8th grid setting when pressing Control plus Q.
Quantizing midi with Input Q.
Turning Input Q on means the recorded midi is quantized as we record it in real time. The quantize strength is set in the Midi Quantize dialog as outlined above.
-
Prior to recording, press Control plus Alt plus Q to open the Extended midi Quantize menu.
-
up-arrow once to "Midi Input Q Global" and make sure it's checked. If it isn't, press enter to check it.
-
Now, when we start recording midi, that midi is being quantized as we play in real time.
Note: Remember, the "Midi Input Q Global" setting needs to be unchecked if we want to quantize after a recording.
The Midi Editor
In the Midi Editor, we have full Control over every aspect of midi recordings/objects. From midi notes, velocity, note lengths, quantizing, moving midi, adding Controllers and step input, all the tools are at our fingertips.
Because of the multiple changes with regard to how the MIDI Editor now works in Samplitude Access V9.0, we decided to create a document explaining exactly how it works. You can get information on how to work with the Midi Editor, see examples of common tasks and read about all of the changes in the:
MIDI Editor Document

Press Control plus Shift plus Y to open the Midi Velocity Dynamics dialog.
-
In here we can select presets from the presets menu, set a range for midi velocity or set a fixed value. For example, if we wanted to set the midi to a set value:
-
A. In the Midi Velocity Dynamics dialog, tab to the "set fixed" field and type in a value.
-
Tab over to the "set fixed" button and press enter.
-
Tab over to "close" and again press enter to return back to the VIP/Arranger Window.
How To Extract Controller Curves From A MIDI File
Note: Important, this does work, but the CC64 does not function normally after deleting midi curves from the track, if it is not the last thing you do. E.G. If you are not finished with the track and you record on the same track, Samplitude will not record any more CC64 messages. In other words, CC64 would either remain at 0 or at 127. If you’re going to use this as a solution, make sure that it is the very last thing you do when working on a midi track.
To Extract Controller Curves From A MIDI Track, perform the following steps:
-
Split as usual the part you want to quantize. For this, it must be across sustain points.
-
Select the object and perform quantize.
Now we presume things are as we would like them to be. However, if you want your sustain back, use the keystroke Control plus Shift plus X to "Extract Controller Curves from MIDI file", or go to the midi menu and enter on the option “Extract Controller curves from midi file”.
Note: it is possible to extract curves from specific ranges etc.
Inserting An Empty Object
There maybe times when you want to insert an empty midi object, for example to program some midi drums in the Midi Editor. You can do this in 2 ways:
Option 1:
-
When in the VIP/arranger, press Alt plus Shift plus 9 to bring up the New Midi Object menu.
-
Arrow down to "empty 1 bar, empty 2 bar, empty 4 bar or empty 8 bar" and press enter. You now have an empty object that you can open in the Midi Editor.
Option 2:
-
When in the VIP/arranger, draw a range to the size of the empty object you wish to insert.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus 0 to create an object the size of the range. You now have an empty object that you can open in the Midi Editor.
Opening Objects For Editing In The MIDI Editor
To open a midi object in the Midi Editor,
-
Select the midi object you wish to work on in the Midi editor.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus D to toggle the Midi Editor.
Note: important. In order to open a midi object in the Midi Editor, we must first select the MIDI object, failure to do so will cause Samplitude to present a message saying:
"there is no MIDI object. Would you like to create one?"
Also, trying to open any selected audio object will not activate the Midi Editor window.
How To Retrospectively Record MIDI On A Track
In Samplitude it’s possible to retrospectively record MIDI on a track. You may be wondering why you would want to do this. Let’s say you are setting up to record some MIDI. You have enabled the record button but not yet hit record whilst playing back your Samplitude project as you are jamming. However, you realise that you are getting some great ideas and you need to get them down. Not a problem as you can set-up Samplitude to record up to 600 second's of MIDI data, even though you haven’t hit record. To do this perform the following steps:
-
In the VIP/Arranger, press Alt plus Shift plus 5 to open the Midi system options.
Alternatively, press the letter "Y" for System Options, then arrow down to Midi.
-
Tab over to the "MIDI recording retrospective" check box and check it
- . Tab once to the "MIDI recording buffer" combo box and select 600 second's.
-
Press Alt plus O or tab over to "Ok" and press enter to apply these settings.
To test that this works as expected, perform the following steps:
-
Turn on record for a track with the Samplitude keystroke Alt and the letter R.
-
Play some MIDI data on that track.
-
Then whenever you like within the 600 second's Window, press “R” to start the actual recording. We will only get the MIDI data after we pressed record, which is expected.
-
Then, press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus 1 to move the object start left.
Note: The object start will move by whatever is set in the object move settings, which is accessed with the keystroke, Control plus Alt plus Shift plus J.
If it’s set to a bar, the start of the object will move by a bar, so revealing a bar of the unrecorded material with each press.
Note: setting this to a larger amount will reveal all the pre recorded material prior to pressing the record button a bit quicker.
Midi-Creating Keyboard Splits
This example will show us how to create a midi keyboard split and set the range of the keyboard on 2 tracks, enabling us to have 1 instrument on the left and another on the right side of the keyboard.
-
On track 1, insert an instrument of your choice you wish to be on the left side of the keyboard.
-
On track 2, insert another instrument of your choice you wish to be on the right side of the keyboard.
-
Now, back on track 1, press Alt plus I to open the Track Options and tab over to midi in. You can Alternatively press Alt plus Shift plus I from the VIP/arranger.
-
Arrow down the midi channel list to channel 16. Now if we down-arrow once more, the Midi Keyboard Split window will open.
-
We are placed in an edit field, which will explain what values need to be set to achieve a specific range. For this example, type -60. Tab to OK and press enter, you will be back in the track Options, so tab over to OK and press enter or press Alt plus O for Ok.
-
You may find there is no input from your keyboard, but don't worry,
we now need to set the midi in channel.
-
From the VIP/Arranger, press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus E to open the track editor.
-
In the track Editor, press Alt plus Shift plus I once to open the midi in menu. Select "all" from this menu and press enter to confirm.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus E again to close the track Editor.
It should now be possible to play the loaded instrument on track 1 all the way up to C3 on the keybaord.
-
Now, go to track 2, press Alt plus I to open the Track Options and tab over to midi in. Alternatively press Alt plus Shift plus I from the VIP/arranger.
-
Arrow down the midi channel list to channel 16. Now if you down-arrow once more, the Midi Keyboard Split window will open.
-
We are placed in an edit field, which will explain what values need to be set to achieve a specific range. For this example, type 60. Tab to OK and press enter, you will be back in the track Options, so tab over to OK and press enter or press Alt plus O for Ok.
-
There may be no input from your keyboard, but don't worry,
we now need to set the midi in channel.
-
From the VIP/Arranger, press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus E to open the track editor.
-
In the track Editor, press Alt plus Shift plus I once to open the midi in menu. Select "all" from this menu and press enter to confirm.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus E again to close the track Editor.
It should be possible to play the loaded instrument on track 2 all the way up from C3 on the keybaord.
-
Finally, in order to play both of these instrument's at the same time, monitoring has to be enabled for both tracks. So, open the Transport Console with Control plus Shift plus T from the vIP/Arranger.
-
tab over to Input Monitoring and press Control plus applications to open the monitoring menu.
-
In this menu, make sure "automatic midi record swhich on current track" is not checked, then press Control plus Shift plus T again to close the transport Console.
-
Now back in the VIP/Arranger, on both track 1 and 2, tab over to "monitoring" and make sure they are both on, the keyboard split should play.
Samplitude Projects, The Wave Editor And Destructive Versus Non Destructive Editing
Samplitude Edits Audio Non-destructively
As with most DAW’s, when in a project, Samplitude edits audio non-destructively. This means that unless we actually tell Samplitude to get rid of audio, E.G. consolidate all objects/takes by removing unwanted samples from the tools menu, or delete objects then it is possible to easily get that audio back by expanding objects back to their original size.
In theory it’s possible to get audio data back by reloading the wave file that contains all of the audio from objects and takes for a track on to a track in the VIP. This audio is stored in the project folder with the VIP project. However, when reloading the wav file for the track in question, Although it contains all of the object data, all of the data does not load up where expected on the timeline, so splitting the audio out into separate objects, cutting and pasting of the audio may be necessary.
The wave Editor Edits Destructively
The wave Editor is basically the Samplitude window prior to loading a project, but with one major difference. Any edits we perform in the wave Editor will be destructive, meaning they cannot be undone after saving. So, if we don't load a project after starting samplitude, importing a file at this point, will allow us to perform some destructive edits on that file. We can import audio, perform some destructive edits and then save that file out again.
Equally, we can destructively edit an audio file within a project by doing the following. For this example, we will add a destructive fade in on an audio object:
-
Select an audio object that you want to fade in destructively.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus E to open that object in the wave editor.
Note: When in the Wave editor, many keystrokes will still speak, but they are not available to us. The keystrokes available are:
-
Press left/right arrow keys to move along the timeline.
Note: It is not possible to change the amount of movement in the wave Editor as we can when in the VIP/Arranger Window but changing the zoom ratio allows us to move by differing amounts.
-
Press Alt plus T to edit the position.
-
Press spacebar to play/stop.
-
All marker keystrokes.
-
All range keystrokes.
-
Delete keystrokes.
-
When in the Wave editor, navigate to the position where we want the fade in to end.
-
Press Shift plus home to draw a range from that position to the beginning of the file.
-
Press Alt plus Shift plus F to open the "Fade In/Out dialog.
-
Adjust any parameters if needed, then tab over to the "fade in" button and press enter.
-
Tab to "Ok" and again press enter.
Now when we play the file, we should have a destructive fade in on that object. Press Control plus F4 to exit the wave editor and return back to the project.
Comping, The Take Composer, Revolver Tracks And Selecting Takes
Comping in Samplitude can be done in a couple of different ways, either via the Take Composer or revolver tracks. Which method you decide to choose will depend on which way is more intuitive. See below for details.
The take Composer
The take composer is a dedicated window, that displays all takes in the same way as tracks are displayed in the VIP/Arranger. We can navigate to a take, audition it and then select/cut sections of that take to be moved to the master comp track. Repeating this process on all chosen takes will result in a comp track.
After the comp/master track is complete, closing the Take Composer will save it and we will be left with a comp track on the track in question. For specific instructions on how to work in the Take Composer, please read the :
Take Composer.html document
How To Use Revolver Tracks For Comping IN Samplitude
If you have ever worked in Pro Tools, then you will be familiar with play lists. Revolver tracks are the Samplitude equivalent. Below are the steps to take when using revolver tracks to make a comp track.
-
Create a revolver track by pressing Control plus Alt plus V, or by tabbing over to revolver menu and hitting enter.
-
Draw a range over the area you want to record multiple takes on.
-
Open the Transport Console window with Control plus Shift plus T and enable punch marker mode with Control plus Shift plus left bracket. Then, close the transport Console with Control plus Shift plus T.
Note: If we want it to loop, so a take is recorded each time it loops, then enable loop mode with Control plus Shift L when in the Transport Console window.
-
When on the revolver track, enable recording and begin recording, press stop when you’re happy with the amount of loops you have recorded. We now have a revolver track with all takes on it.
-
Now select a take by pressing Alt plus Shift plus O twice and arrowing down to takes sub menu. Hit enter on the first take. Repeat to hear all the takes and audition them.
-
We can listen to and audition takes in the Take Manager. However, we cannot replace the current take here. So,
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus T to open the take Manager.
-
In the takes list, arrow to a take and press Shift plus spacebar to play it, press spacebar to stop.
-
Go to the revolver menu again, see above, and select create revolver copy. This will create a copy of your existing take, so, you will be able to keep all original takes in the revolver prior to editing.
-
You can now edit the selected take, so go ahead and split, trim or delete all of the parts of the take you don’t want and leave what you want to keep.
Alternatively, split out the parts you wish to keep, so you can then move that part down to a comp track.
If you haven’t already got a track below your revolver track, create 1 by pressing Control plus Shift plus 1.
-
When you’re happy, select your edited take/object and press Control plus Shift plus Alt plus down-arrow to move it down to the track below.
-
Move back to your revolver track, select another take and edit it accordingly, then, select that take/object and again move it down with Control plus Alt plus Shift plus down-arrow to create your comp track, as when you move an object down to another track, it will keep all time positions. For example, if you kept bar 1 from take 1, 2 from take 2 etc, they will all line up seamlessly on the track below the revolver track.
Remember you still have all of your original takes in the revolver.
Wave Files And Audio
How To Set The Tempo In A Wav/Loop File
To do this perform the following steps:
-
Create a new project.
-
Important. Go to the tempo menu and click on Tempo map BPM mode, not fit to grid.
-
Import your loop on an audio track, when done, press the end key and check the time position, the position will depend on the length of the loop.
-
Stay at this time position, and press Shift plus Home To draw a range from the start of your project to the end of the wave file.
-
Press alt plus shift plus 7 to enter the project properties dialog box, and tab a few times until you get to a button called "get BPM from selected range". press spacebar then okay the dialogue. Samplitude will ask you a very long question to which you must answer no by typing Alt plus N.
-
Press Home to go back to the beginning of the project and play it with the metronome on and verify that both are synced.
-
Select the object Containing the loop, it is the only one in the project, but you still must select it. with Alt plus Left or Right Arrow keys.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus D for the "duplicate object multiple" and select how many times you want to copy the object.
Note: if the wav file is acidized then you don't need to do any of the above. Simply import it from the file browser, check the BPM check box and it should fit to the tempo of the VIP project.
Inserting Wav Files On To A Specific Audio Track With Timestamps
For some reason, Samplitude isn't set up to import audio on to a specific track. It's also not set-up to import wav files with timestamps by default. To change this behaviour, do the following:
-
Press W to import an audio file.
-
Extremely important, tab to the "Options" button and press spacebar to open that dialog.
-
Choose the "positioning in project Use sync positions (Timestamp) of waves" radio button.
-
Press the tab key and choose the "positioning in project load all files to selected track".
-
Tab a couple of times to the "File handling and check the "Copy wave files to project folder" check box.
-
(optional) Tab to the "File handling and check the "convert compressed files to wave format check box.
It's worth thoroughly exploring all options available in the "Options For Loading Audio Files" dialog box. Remember that if for any reason you reinstall the SamplitudeAccessAccessibilityINIFiles, then you will need to apply the above settings again.
How To consolidate all Audio objects/takes In Samplitude
Note: extremely important: if you have not done this before, then you must have all VIP projects open, because Samplitude looks everywhere inside the folder where Samplitude related projects are stored. Failure to open all projects will result in data loss from any project that is not open.
To do this perform the following steps:
-
Press the Alt key followed by the letter L to navigate to the tools menu
-
Press the letter U to quickly navigate to the Remove Unused Samples dialog box.
-
Tab to the "Save additional samples for each object" and set that option to 0 by clearing data from the edit box and typing in 0.
Note: it is safe to do this, as all of your audio will have been crossfaded, so no extra samples are required.
-
Tab over to the "continue button" or press the keyboard shortcut Alt plus the letter O to activate it.
A dialog box will appear. The dialog box says the following:
"Remove unused Samples dialog. Warning! This operation changes all physical projects and may take a long time! If multiple VIPs access the same physical projects all VIPs must be opened to avoid data loss! Undo is not available after this operation."
-
If you have all projects open and you are happy to continue, press the enter key
-
The following dialog box will appear:
"Samplitude dialog. Remove unused Samples finished. Please save your project first! All previous copies of these project are invalid."
-
Extremely important: press Control plus S to save your project.
Note: If you do not press Control plus S at this stage to save your project, then it is possible that the audio will become separated from the project in question.
How To Create An Exported Multitrack With Mono and Stereo Stems In Samplitude
Note: extremely important. The following is destructive meaning that it cannot be undone. You may wish to first make a copy of the project or don't press Control S at the end to save the project if you are not happy with the results. You can, if you wish, as part of the process choose to save all of the data out into a different folder. Also, if the project contains any MIDI data, then that will be lost, unless you unselect any MIDI objects before you start. You could of course create a separate project that contains MIDI data before you start from Samplitude's "Save As" dialog box. Tip: the following process can also be applied on an object basis, E.G. before you start you could select all of the objects that you wish to render out, and only they would be rendered to a single wave file for each object. In order to do this, we first need to get to the track bouncing dialog. To do this do the following:
-
Press (Alt followed by the letter L for the tools menu and press Enter).
-
Once in the "Advanced Export & &Track Bouncing" dialog, choose From the following options.
-
source routing combo box choose master.
-
From the source length combo box choose from VIP start to last object.
-
From the combo box choose Source/vertical functions all tracks individually (Multitrack bounce)
-
From the generate combo box choose Generate replace objects in VIP. This will replace all objects that were previously named take 1 etc with wav files that contain the name of each track in the project.
-
Choose the file type in the next part of the dialog. Wav is chosen by default, Although you can choose Flac if you wish.
-
Tab to the generate bit depth field and choose the bit depth.
The default is 16-bit and it goes up to 32-bit, Although with FLAC the highest is 24 bit.
-
Tab over To the "generate stereo" combo box and when located over it, press the end key to choose the "Automatic" button. This will cause Samplitude to generate mono and stereo wav files.
-
Tab over to the generate sample rate and set it to whatever you want. The default is to keep it the same as the VIP project that you have loaded.
-
Tab over to the "options exclude master effects from bouncing check box. By default, this is not checked.
-
Tab over to the "options exclude effects of target track. This check box is also unchecked.
-
Tab over to the "from VIP start to last object end" radio button and choose it.
-
Tab over to the "replace object(s) in current VIP" radio button and choose it, or you may if you wish choose another option depending on what you would like to do, such as "New separate object in current VIP" or, "New VIP".
-
Tab over to the Multitrack bounce (each file to a track) check box and check it if it is not checked.
-
Hit the ok button with the keystroke Alt and the letter O to apply all of your settings and leave the dialog box.
-
A save as dialog will open. This dialog contains the name of the project. It is possible to Alter the location where all of the data will be saved to in this dialog box.
-
Choose the location where you wish Samplitude to save all of the data to. Changing this location to a new folder will preserve the old project and its data
-
Once we have made the choices we would like, press the enter key to dismiss it and let Samplitude create all of the wav data.
-
Once it has finished doing that if you are happy with the named objects press the keystroke Control S to save the project.
You now have a project that contains new objects, but crucially nun of these objects are called take 1 etc but instead are named the same as the tracks which they reside on.
How To retrospectively record Audio ON A Track
In Samplitude it’s possible to retrospectively record Audio on a track. You may be wondering why you would want to do this. Let’s say you are setting up to record a vocalist. You have enabled the record button but not yet hit record whilst playing back audio as you are still getting the levels set-up. However, you realise that the vocalist is recording a killer take. Not a problem as you can set-up Samplitude to record up to 2 Minutes of audio even though you haven’t hit record. To do this perform the following steps:
-
When in the VIP/arranger, press "Y" to open system settings.
-
Press "R" for the record options, tab over and enable the Pre-Recording (asio only) check box.
-
Shift tab back once to the offset combo box and select 120 second's.
-
Tab to "Ok" and press enter or press Alt plus O to apply settings and return back to the vIP/Arranger.
To test that this works as expected, perform the following steps:
-
Turn on record for a track with Alt plus R.
-
Start speaking on that track.
-
Then, whenever you like within the 2 Minute Window, press “R” to start the actual recording. The result is you only get what you said after you pressed record, which is expected.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus 1 to move the object start left. It will move to whatever you have set in the object move settings, which is accessed with Control plus Alt plus Shift plus J.
Note: If it’s set to a bar, the start of the object will move by a bar, revealing a bar of the unrecorded material with each press. Setting this to a larger amount will reveal all the material pre-recorded prior to pressing the record button.
Enabling Post Recording On An Audio Track
It's possible for Samplitude to record up to 2 second's on the end of a take. However, in order for this to work you will need to disable the "Record button stops recording after standard playback" check box in record options. You will also need to keep the transport engaged in order that the post recording is captured. To do this perform the following steps:
-
When in the VIP/arranger, press "Y" to open system settings.
-
Press "R" for record options, tab over and enable the post recording check box.
-
Shift tab back once to the Post-Recording combo box and select 2 second's.
-
If you haven't already, Shift tab back and check that the "Record button stops recording after standard playback" check box isn't checked
-
Tab to "Ok" and press enter, or press Alt plus O to apply settings and return back to the vIP/Arranger.
To test that this works as expected, perform the following steps:
-
Turn on record for a track with Alt plus R.
-
Press the letter R to start recording.
-
Start speaking on that track, counting up from 1 to 10 is a good option.
The result is you only got what you said before you stopped recording, which is expected.
-
Press Control plus Alt plus Shift plus 4 to move the object end right.
This will move by whatever you have set in the object move settings, which you can access with Control plus Alt plus Shift plus J.
-
Now drag the start of the object Left with Control plus Alt plus Shift and 1 on the numbers row.
All of the recorded material is now exposed as a single object.
VIP Templates
Configuring templates in Samplitude is always a good option prior to doing any work. This allows us to create specific templates for different projects, create how many tracks we may need, set any audio and MIDI inputs and outputs, create folders for specific groups of instrument's, set up sub mix buses, auxiliary buses/sends, name tracks and load any instrument's/effects we may need etc. We can then load that template when we have work to do. It's a great time saver if we create the outline of a project that we may need.
Copying Tracks From A Template To An Open VIP Project
To do this perform the following steps:
-
Open Windows explorer by pressing windows plus E.
-
Navigate to the template in question.
-
Press the enter key to open the template.
-
Press Control plus the letter A to highlight all of the tracks in the template.
-
Press Alt plus C to copy the tracks to the clipboard.
-
Open Samplitude, then open the project/template where you wish to paste the tracks.
-
Press Alt plus V to paste. Pay attention to the dialog that comes up, because we may not for example wish to paste any objects into the VIP or may not wish to copy any effects or softsynths that are present.
A Note ON Saving VIP Files As Templates
Remember, when saving a VIP as a template, we will either want to save the file in the templates folder or copy it to where our templates are stored. Templates are usually stored in:
%programdata%\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X4/X5/X6 Suite\Templates
Folder, but exactly where the location of that folder is will depend on whether you performed a custom install of Samplitude or not.

Finally, go into the MP3 editor (Alt followed by the letter D, then press the letter C) until you hear "CD Text / MP3 ID editor". Then, either load up the data from the .cdt file which you can save out from your previous DDP project and load that data into the new project you have created. Alternatively, type in the data again.
A Note About Adding Data To The Free DB Org Database
If you are using a 32-bit E-mail program on your system, such as Outlook 2003 and you attempt to submit data using Samplitude Pro X Suite (64-Bit), then you will receive an error message, as the version of Samplitude that you are using needs to be the same as the E-mail package on your system, E.G. 32-bit for 32 bit Samplitude and 64-bit for 64 bit Samplitude.
Using Plug-ins With HotSpotClicker
Note: In 32-bit and 64-bit plug-ins, Automatic Window title swhiching does not work because HsC tells you that "Automatic Window Title Swhiching is not presently installed". This is a known issue with how HotSpotClicker is installed with the Samplitude scripts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I want to work in hours, minutes and second's and not bars, beats and ticks, can I do this?
Answer:
Samplitude Access supports 2 time formats:
1. Bars, beats and ticks (BBT).
2. Hours, minutes, second's and millisecond's (HMSMS).
To swhich between these 2 time formats:
1. When in the VIP/Arranger, press Alt plus Shift plus 1 on the numbers row for BBT format.
2. When in the VIP/Arranger, press Alt plus Shift plus 2 on the numbers row for HMSMS format.
Q. How do I move to a specific time when using the position edit field?
Answer:
-
When in the VIP/Arranger, press Alt plus T or jaws key plus down-arrow twice quickly to open the time edit field.
Note: If you have your transport settings set to Bars, beats and ticks for example, in this edit field, when you arrow to the left,
The left most "colon" is the "bars.
-
The middle "colon" is the beats.
-
The right most number is the ticks.
-
Pressing the up/down-arrow keys or the page up/down keys whilst focused on any of these fields will change the values by smaller and larger amounts respectively.
Note: Alternatively, to go to an exact bar, arrow over to the left until Jaws stops saying, "Colon", you will now be focused on the "bars" section. Now, type in the bar you want to move to , for example, if you want to move to bar 9 then you would type in:
009:01:000.
Q. When pressing the left/right arrow keys, I'm not moving by a bar, what do I do?
Answer:
When moving through a project, Samplitude can "snap" to the grid". This means it will snap at specific points, E.G. snap to a bar, a beat, 2 bars etc etc etc. Depending on whether or not this setting is enabled, will determine how far you move when pressing the arrow keys.
Note: When Samplitude is not snapping to the grid, then the left/right arrow keys are set by the current zoom ratio.
To enable/disable "snap to grid",
-
When in the VIP/Arranger, press Alt to go to the main menu, then right arrow to the View menu.
-
Arrow down to "snap active" and make sure it's checked, if it isn't, press enter to check it.
Note: At this point, when you press the arrow keys, you will move by a certain amount. To change this movement amount,
Press Shift plus F5 to set this amount to beats.
-
Press Shift plus F6 to set this amount to a full bar.
-
Press Shift plus F7 to set this amount to 2 bars.
-
Press Shift plus F8 to set this amount to 4 bars.
-
Press Shift plus F9 to set this amount to the current quantize value.
For example: If you have your quantize value set to 64ths, then pressing the left/right arrow keys will move by 24 ticks.
Q. When selecting objects with alt plus left/right arrow keys, Jaws says nothing, what am I doing wrong?
Answer:
If objects are present on the track you're working on, then you're probably doing nothing wrong. The problem will be:
-
You have selected all objects on the track first with shift plus A. If this is the case, then alt plus left/right arrow will not select a next or previous object, as all objects are currently selected.
-
The zoom ratio is too high and therefore not showing the objects you've selected. Press Jaws key plus end to query if the selected object is visible and adjust the zoom ratio accordingly.
-
The track you're on has no objects. Jaws will only announce any objects if they are visible when pressing alt plus left/right arrow keys.
To avoid any confusion, here's the recommended steps we highly recommend to take when selecting and working with objects.
-
When on a track with objects, press the letter Z to initiate an object selection.
Note: This will select the object nearest to your current position and automatically zoom to the correct zoom ratio.
-
Press alt plus right or alt plus left arrows to move to the next/previous object if available. Jaws will now speak objects as you move. If Jaws stops speaking, then there are no more objects or only 1 object on the track. Press jaws key plus end to query the current selection.
-
Press jaws key plus end to query the selected objects name, start time, end time and length.
Note: alternatively, press control plus jaws key plus home, up arrow or page up to get the selected objects start, length and end respectively.
Q. When reading meters, is this referring to the master or track levels?
Answer:
By default, when you read meters, they are reporting the master track output. If you want to check levels on a specific track,
-
When on the track in question, press Alt plus S to solo the track or Alt plus Shift plus S to solo that track exclusively.
-
Now when you read the meters, this will be the only track running through the master track, so it will only report the levels for this track.
Note: You can also select specific audio outputs to monitor or set the meters to "input". To do this,
-
When in the VIP/Arranger or Visualization Window, press F5 to open the Visualization menu.
Arrow down to "input" and check it if you want to set meters to input, or arrow to the "output" sub menu to select specific audio outputs.
Note: Remember to close the Visualization window with Control plus Alt plus Shift plus V each time you make changes or query meters.
Q. I have a number of audio files I want to import all at once, how do I do this?
Answer:
When importing audio in Samplitude, you can specify how this audio is imported. You can choose to have all imported audio on the same track, on different tracks, imported alphabetically, in the order of the selection, with timestamps etc etc etc.
For steps to do this, please read the
Inserting Wav Files On To A Specific Audio Track With Timestamps
section of this document.
Q: I know you can easily change from a MIDI track to an audio track. Is it possible to change the MIDI volume to audio volume without changing to an audio track?
Answer:
yes. You can change between MIDI and audio volumes and choose other options such as VCA faders/groups on a track when focused on the volume column by using the keystroke Control plus Applications.
Note: If you change from MIDI to audio volume, then Samplitude will ask you if you wish to reset the volume. Choosing no will leave the MIDI volume at the setting you set it to, choosing yes will set the MIDI volume back to 101.
Also, remember that by default that MIDI volume is set to 101 on a MIDI track. This equates to an audio volume setting of 0. Turning the volume right up will Set a MIDI volume to 127 or the audio volume to plus 12.
Q. Is it possible to select more than one track in the VIP/Arranger, or do I have to open the Track Manager to do this?
Answer:
It isn't currently possible to select more than 1 track when in the VIP/Arranger, but it is hoped we will get this functionality into Samplitude Access in the future. In order to select multiple tracks, you need to do this in the Track Manager. To do this,
-
When in the VIP/Arranger, press Control plus Shift plus S to open the track Manager.
-
Arrow down the track list and press enter to toggle the selection of the tracks you wish to select.
-
Press Control plus Shift plus S again to close the Track Manager.
Note: Currently, selecting tracks is only useful when you want to delete multiple tracks at once, as other functions that require this selection can get undone when using the keyboard for track navigation, or they require specific use of the mouse.
Q. How do I insert a soft synth or FX onto a track?
Answer:
To read about how to insert instrument's and effects on to a track, please see the section:
FX Mode, Inserting SoftSynths and Audio Plugins.
Q. When in the parameter list, how do I jump to parameters?
Answer:
To move to specific groups of parameters in the parameter view, press 1 through 0.
E.G. press 0 to move to parameter 01, repeat for 02, 03 etc. Press 5 to move to parameter 50, repeat for 51, 52 etc.
Q. Is there a way to assign multiple outputs to a single instrument?
Answer:
Assigning outputs to instrument's is a process that has to be done within the plugin/instrument itself. In Independence for example, you can create and route parts of available instrument's to those outputs, but this isn't possible within Samplitude prior to inserting and configuring that instrument/plugin.
This isn't a limitation of Samplitude, it is simply that multiple outputs first need to be configured within the instrument/plugin first. Different plugins will offer different choices when it comes to routing, but for steps to route an Independence drum kit to separate outputs, please see the section,
How To Insert And Route Independence With Multiple Outputs-Drum Kit Example.
Note: Accessibility of any instrument/plugin that is capable of this kind of routing, will differ and is beyond the scope of this document.
Q. When I set a range, does it apply to just the track with focus, all tracks or only selected tracks?
Answer:
When you set a range, you then need to decide what you want to do with it. Drawing a range means a certain amount of the timeline is marked, however, at this point it isn't applied to any tracks at all. You need to decide to loop it, set it to the current track or set it to all tracks etc.
For more specific information on ranges, what they can be used for and how to set them to tracks, please read the
Ranges
section of this document.
Q. "From" and "Thru" is a familiar paradigm from other DAWS which people might be familiar with. How is this concept translated to Samplitude?
Answer:
Samplitude doesn't have a dedicated "from and thru" feature, but it is possible to do this with the mouse. Samplitude Access has created its own take on this popular way of selecting specific parts of a project. To do this,
-
Navigate to the point where you want your selection/range to start.
-
Press Control plus 9 to set the start point.
For more information on working with ranges and the "from and thru" feature, please see the
Ranges
section of this document.
Q. When tabbing through the VIP/Arranger I get the message "The Control was not visible, auto zoomed the track header in", what's happening?
Answer:
When in the VIP/Arranger, the scripts have to do a lot of work for us, as virtually all Controls are natively inaccessible. When we are tabbing around, the scripts need to determine if certain Controls are in the positions we expect them to be in, in order to report and give us feedback on those Controls.
There may be some circumstances for example when either,
-
These Controls are not visible, so the scripts cannot report/give us feedback.
-
The scripts have lost focus in the VIP/Arranger.
-
Another window is open and in the foreground.
-
The track is not at the correct size.
In such cases, the scripts automatically attempt to resolve the situation so we can continue working, but there maybe occasions where all attempts to resolve things fail. If you hear this message and it doesn't resolve the problem, please,
-
Try pressing jaws key plus escape to refresh the window and try to get focus. This key goes through a number of possible issues to resolve things.
-
Try Alt tabbing away and back into Samplitude.
-
If none of the above works, please, go to your task list by pressing jaws key plus F10 and see if any other windows are open. E.G. Samplitude is open, but there is also a plugin open that's in the foreground. If there is, then press enter on this window to resolve the problem.
Q. Can I use samplitude Access with my screen shade on?
Answer:
No, Samplitude Access will not work if you have your screen shade on. Please see the
System Requirements
section of this document for more details.
Q. When I import a midi file into Samplitude, Jaws loses focus and it seems as if I'm stuck, what do I do?
Answer:
This is a known issue and is beyond the scope of the Samplitude Access scripts. We hope Magix will address this problem in the near future, but in the meantime, if you lose focus, after importing midi, Alt tab out of Samplitude and then Alt tab back in. Jaws should regain focus, and this should resolve the problem
Q. When I press jaws key plus Q, it reports that the default scripts are loaded and the scripts do not work, what do I do?
Answer:
If you press jaws key plus Q and it says the default scripts are loaded, then this means the Samplitude Access scripts are not active. This could happen in a number of areas in Samplitude, but I'll take the main Samplitude Access scripts to explain what to do.
When in the Arranger, if the default scripts are reported as active when pressing jaws key plus Q, then do the following:
- Navigate to your ENU folder where the Samplitude Access Scripts are installed.
This will be
"C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\your jaws version number\Settings\enu\"
- Now look for a file called "SAM_X64.jcf".
- Once you've found it, simply delete this file and see if the scripts are now working.
Note: If you don't have this file to delete, if it doesn't resolve the problem, or if some other scripts are not working, then please post to the mailing list with the issue.
Q. Does Samplitude Access support other languages?
Answer:
No, currently Samplitude Access is only supported on English Windows running an English version of Samplitude. However, it is hoped in the near future files will be available for users to translate into any other language.
Q. I don't hear my position when pressing the left/right arrow keys, what's wrong?
Answer:
You may have turned the speaking of your position off. Press control plus shift plus enter to turn it on. If this doesn't solve the issue, please try re-opening the project, as it's possible the time display on the docker didn't get loaded.
Q. How do I know which of the various hotkeys to use for cut, copy,, paste and Delete?
Answer:
The hotkey to use for performing each of these actions depends on the type of item which you want to cut, copy,, paste or delete. Here is a summary of which hotkeys should be used with each type of item.
-
Ranges: To cut, copy,, paste or delete an applied range use the hotkeys X, C,, V and delete, respectively.
Note: Press Control plus delete to perform a ripple delete, (meaning all data to the right of the range will slide left, leaving no silence).
-
Tracks: To cut, copy,, paste or delete tracks use the hotkeys Alt plus x, Alt plus c,, Alt plus v and Alt plus delete, respectively.
-
Objects: to cut, copy,, paste or delete a selected object use the hotkeys Alt plus Shift plus X, Alt plus Shift plus C,, Alt plus Shift plus V and Alt plus Shift plus delete, respectively.
-
Pasting with ripple: Use Control plus V, which means sliding everything to the right to make room for what you are pasting.
Q. Is there another method to move through system settings, as it's a little sluggish?
Answer:
Yes, you can try using the touch cursor, please follow the below steps to do this:
- While in the Arranger window, press the letter "Y" to open System Settings. You will now be focused on the audio set up option
- Press shift plus numpad plus to activate the Jaws touch cursor.
- Press the tab/shift/tab key or left/right arrow keys to move through all available options in the main System Settings tree view.
- When you are on the option you want, press enter.
- Finally, now press the numpad plus key twice quickly to activate the Jaws Pc cursor again. You can now tab/shift tab through options in that dialog.
Q. How do I take a noise print when using the Restoration Suite-DeNoiser Plugin? (Samplitude Suite Only)
Answer:
The Restoration Suite of plugins that comes with Samplitude ProX Suite gives you some very powerful tools for restoring and cleaning up any audio. One of these is the deNoiser plugin. It allows you to take a noise print of the unwanted noise you want to remove from a file. You can then clean up the file using this noise print. So, how do we do it?
Well there are 3 ways to achieve this, but currently the first way using the noise print wizard is not accessible:
-
Take a noise print using the Noise Print Wizard in the DeNoiser dialog.
Note: This control has been excluded from the available controls in the deNoiser, because the associated window that opens does not allow for reliable focus and navigation. Also, any noise print taken from this window is placed in a "temp" folder with an unrelated name, which makes locating and working with this noise print very inefficient for a visually impaired person. In this case, the file would be saved in the following location:
"C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X6 Suite\fx-preset\NoisePrintSamples\TEMP"
-
Take a noise print from a file loaded into the Wave Editor destructively.
Note: You can load a file into the Wave editor, draw a range over the piece of audio you want as the noise print/sample and then go to the Effects menu/Restoration Suite/Get Noise Sample. The sample will be saved in the following location with an unrelated name:
"C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X6 Suite\fx-preset\NoisePrintSamples\TEMP"
-
take a noise print from an exported range, which is recommended.
Note: This method allows you to name the file appropriately in a location of your choice.
Ok, so lets take a look at how we would get our noise print using the recommended method.
-
Load the file you want to take a noise print from into a project. If the file is part of a multi track project, then solo this track.
-
Draw a range over the section of the file that you want as your noise print. E.g. the noise between any spoken word or music, you only need a small section, but this has to be the unwanted noise without any other audio included.
-
When you have that unwanted noise within a range, press control plus E to open the export dialog.
-
In the Export dialog, tab to "Export Settings and press enter to open the menu and make sure "marked range" is checked.
-
Now name the file and browse to a location where you want to save this noise print.
Note: If you want to use the default location for noise samples and save it with all the other presets, then save it to the following location:
"C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Samplitude Pro X6 Suite\fx-preset\NoisePrintSamples\"
Otherwise, anywhere else on your Pc is fine.
-
After saving your noise print/sample, insert the DeNoiser onto the track in question.
-
If you saved the file in the default location for noise samples, then tab over to the "Noise Sample File Menu" and press enter, your file should now be included for you to select.
If you saved it in another location, tab to the "Noise Sample Load button", press enter, then browse to the file.
-
You now have your noise sample available in the DeNoiser dialog. Press the "Noise sample play button" to hear the noise print/sample you've loaded.
Tip: Toggling the "inverse button" will switch between the audio file your editing and the noise you're removing. Note: The "inverse button" works the same across all of the restoration Suite of plugins.
Q. Can I move through the System Settings main treeview options using another method?
When moving through the System Settings main treeview, it can be a little sluggish, due to specific focus the scripts have to deal with. If you want another/quicker way to navigate these options, do the following:
- While in the Arranger window, press the letter "Y" to open System Settings. You will now be focused on the audio set up option
- Press shift plus numpad plus to activate the Jaws touch cursor.
- Press the tab/shift/tab key or left/right arrow keys to move through all available options in the main System Settings tree view.
- When you are on the option you want, press enter.
- Finally, now press the numpad plus key twice quickly to activate the Jaws Pc cursor again. You can now tab/shift tab through options in that dialog.
